Ngmoco CEO Neil Young posted another update last week about We Rule. That game is probably the biggest hit Ngmoco has come across yet with its freemium model, but unfortunately, the title has been plagued with service outages since the release. Young says that they simply underestimated the amount of people who want to play the game, and that they're working as quickly as possible to scale the server infrastructure on both the We Rule and Plus+ systems. The game is free-to-play, but in-game purchases still seem to be doing well for the company, as the app currently sits at number 40 on the Top Grossing list in the App Store, above a few $0.99 apps and even much more expensive fare.
Young says the company is also pushing out content updates for the game -- there are new crops to grow and new buildings to buy and build on the farms. I'm playing We Rule [...]

Filed under: App StoreWhen I saw Mac developer Fraser Speirs' Twitter post linking to a blog entry titled "Back In" I knew what it was about: the App Store.
Back in September 2008, Fraser announced he was ceasing new iPhone OS development in a widely-linked post titled "App Store: I'm out".
Fraser wasn't the first or last to announce that he was giving up on the App Store, but he is the first that I'm aware of who has come back. Why? Because to ignore the iPhone OS is to risk missing too many potential new customers. He says that he hasn't seen any comparable alternatives to the iPhone platform, and with the arrival of the iPad, Apple's mobile device platform is the place to be. "I have to ask myself if there's a train that I would rather be on," says Speirs. "I don't see one right now, and I don't see one coming down the track."

OK, true, it's not very functional. Unfortunately part of the screen gets cut off, portability goes out the window, and it doesn't make your iPad look any sleeker or cleaner. Flickr user mapgoblin accomplished this (did he just stick it in the Mac, or did he cut a custom-designed slot for it to sit in?), but however it was done, just the act of combining the two devices gets a salute from us.

8) World of Warcraft streaming to an iPad

Filed under: iPadFor years I've wanted a decent World of Warcraft (WoW) iPhone app from Blizzard. There's an armory app that lets you browse your gear and so forth, but that's not enough. I'd like to track auctions, access in-game email, visit the bank and so on.
All of that went out the window when I saw this.
It's a screenshot of WoW supposedly being streamed to an iPad via Gaikai. Gaikai is a new service, currently in beta, that hosts and streams any game to your computer via a browser. Basically, you play a game that lives on their servers while watching a streaming video of the action. Their website says that "...the latest Adobe Flash player" is required, so we're not sure how this is being pulled off. Perhaps they're using an unreleased app.
More importantly is the question, how in the world are you going to play WoW without a mouse? We second Gizmodo's call for video on this [...]

9) Microsoft embracing HTML5 / H.264 for IE 9

Filed under: Internet ToolsShortly after Steve Jobs delivered his "Thoughts on Flash" missive to the world last week, Microsoft's general manager for the Internet Explorer browser mentioned that the huge software company is putting its muscle behind the H.264 standard for HTML5 video content. Apple, of course, has been promoting the H.264 standard for video content in HTML5 as a replacement for Flash-based video content.
Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for Internet Explorer, stated last week in a blog posting that the "future of the web is HTML5." He noted that the HTML5 specification does not specify a particular format, and that "H.264 is an excellent format." The bottom line? "In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video only." Filed under: AppleAccording to the New York Post, The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are negotiating which of them will launch an inquiry into a clause in the iPhone OS 4 SDK that bans the porting of software originally written for Adobe's Flash, Sun's Java or Microsoft's Silverlight/Mono to the iPhone OS.
The issue at hand is this: Does the restriction kill competition by forcing developers to create applications that only run on Apple's devices rather than work with other operating systems and hardware like those from Google and RIM?
Adobe had been working on a feature in Creative Suite 5 that would allow Flash applications to be ported to the iPhone. Under this rule, those apps would be rejected.

Update: After this article was written I learned of mstmp which I highly recommend instead of mailsend.
There are times that I want my iMac to be able to email me: when certain scripts run via cron or launchd, when certain events happen (a backup has been completed), etc. I've found that none of the included command-line programs work.
The good news is that, with a UNIX foundation, it was fairly easy to find a free program which would do just that.
A little searching turned up a free program called mailsend, which will work. For this example I will be using a Gmail account, which requires OpenSSL. Your mail server may not require OpenSSL support, but if it's possible, I encourage you to use it.
The short version of the instructions are as follows:
1) Download and install OpenSSL to /usr/local/ssl/

The figure does not break out Wi-Fi vs. 3G iPads, yet the number is still staggering considering it only took 28 days. For the original iPhone, the million unit milestone was not hit until 74 days after release.

Apple also announced that iPad users had purchased 12 million apps and 1.5 million eBooks from its fledgling store. Friday was the release of the iPad 3G in the US; it's likely that this was the source of the final push that got Apple to the millionth unit. Within a few hours of its release the iPad had already been jailbroken and video proof released. The Dev-Team with @comex have released the first "userland" jailbreak for iPhone OS devices since the initial year of the iPhone's release.
The current jailbreak, dubbed "Spirit," allows you to jailbreak all models of iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running the latest firmwares available (3.2 and 3.1.3, respectively, as of this writing).
Also, the authors note that "On iPad, all this is still sort of beta," and as such if anything goes wrong you might need to restore.

Filed under: GamingIf you're not one of the many who have discovered Bird Strike yet, then you're in luck. The game just got a solid update, with new levels, new power-ups, and OpenFeint integration. The game is almost like Doodle Jump but I actually enjoyed it a little more. You play a bird that is constantly trying to fly higher and higher with the help of rockets and various tools. The graphics are clean and fun, and it's actually a little more forgiving than some of the Doodle Jump-style games that I've played.
The game was free for a little while and is now back up to US$0.99. Even at that price, though, it's an easy buy. Lots and lots of people have already gotten a chance to play the game, because it's hit nearly every spot on the charts already.
