Blog Alert for The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), Mar 30, 2010

New Posts to The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mar 30, 2010:

------------------------------------------------------------------
1) iPad game announcements out early and often
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/ipad-game-announcements-out-early-and-often/

The trickle of iPad games released last week has now become a flood of iPad software news. Everybody is climbing over themselves to get the word out there about launch titles. Mobile Entertainment has what's probably the biggest news: another new swarm of titles has been found in the App Store's database, including iPad versions of the popular Fieldrunners and Flick Fishing games. Fieldrunners is a little more expensive than the iPhone version, at US$7.99, while Flick Fishing is one the few iPhone games keeping its price, logging in at $2.99.

Words with Friends HD has also been announced, and it looks excellent -- big, bright, and beautiful on the iPad's screen. The extra space also gives a little more breathing room for chatting while playing with friends. There's not a lot of actual information about the game out yet, but we presume that you will be able to play [...]

2) First Look: Game Table for the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/first-look-game-table-for-the-ipad/

Here's some screenshots for another upcoming iPad app called Game Table. The app brings Checkers, Chess, and various card games onto Apple's tablet with detailed graphics and an "intuitive" interface -- the developers claim it's like carrying full board games around with you, but without all the little pieces and doodads.

Unfortunately, that also means that you don't actually "play" any games on the device -- it's just a series of boards and interactive pieces for them, so it's up to you as the player to determine how you want to actually move them around. That could be either a benefit (if you have a weird variation of poker or chess that you like to play that wouldn't normally be found in a mobile game, there you go) or a hindrance, if you'd rather your board game action be a little bit more guided. But the price is right -- the Game Table is set to release for just [...]

3) Gamesalad supports iPad game development
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/gamesalad-supports-ipad-game-development/

The folks over at Gamesalad have announced that they're releasing iPad functionality on their super-simple game development platform. They've already offered an iPhone development service for just 99 dollars, and now their system will export games directly to the iPad in the same type of way.

I've never actually used their app, though we did get to see in action on the floor at Macworld earlier this year. It seems super simple -- you just drag and drop sprites onto a 2D field and set up different behaviors for each one. If you've been itching to make a game, but aren't quite ready to dive in to punching out code, this might be a good place to start.TUAWGamesalad supports iPad game development originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. 4) First Look: Sudoku Real Edition
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/first-look-sudoku-real-edition/

According to its developers David Jones and Amy Burton, Sudoku Real Edition offers a game play experience that aims to be "as real as possible, almost as if you bought a Sudoku book and sat down at a table to play." As this sneak peek video shows, that goal is not too far off the mark.

tweetmeme_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/first-look-sudoku-real-edition/" tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"
Priced at $2.99, this new iPad app was built using real world graphics that were digitized for game play. If you're into Sudoku, you'll probably be impressed by this application's beautifully designed interfaces. It's nice to see how thoroughly the developers created a custom iPad experience.

One discordant note is that they used standard Apple switches (ON-OFF buttons) in their Settings dialog instead of creating a custom choice control that better matched their other UI [...]

5) Apple to charge for future iPad OS updates
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/apple-to-charge-for-future-ipad-os-updates/

Filed under: iPadThe Golden Master version of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK has begun making its way to developers -- it's the shipping version of the software that these devs must use to create their killer iPad apps. At the same time Apple made the GM version of the SDK available, they also posted two other new files including an iPad firmware restore file (useless without an iPad) and the end-user licensing agreement (EULA) for iPad.

What's unique about the file containing the EULA is that it shows that future OS updates for iPad may not be free. Paraphrasing the statement, it says that Apple will provide free iPad OS updates from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS release following the version that the iPad shipped with. The example notes that if the iPad shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide free updates up to and including 4.0.

6) Greystripe bringing Flash (ads) to iPhone and iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/greystripe-bringing-flash-ads-to-iphone-and-ipad/

Filed under: iPadWell the good news is: Flash is going to be on the iPhone and iPad. The bad news is that it's going to be only for ads.

Greystripe, a rich media mobile advertising network, has announced that a system called "iFlash ad units" will launch in May. The tech allows advertisers to deliver their ads to the Apple devices which, of course, don't support Flash. According to a company news release, Greystripe takes ads created using Flash and transcodes them to run on the iPhone and iPad, presumably in other companies' applications. The company has been delivering ads to the iPhone using this method already. And now an updated version will hit the iPhone and the iPad, including full screen ads.

Many advertisers believe Flash-delivered ads have higher awareness and are more effective. But ads are ads -- the code behind them is just code, and of course it depends on the [...]

7) Don't panic over these iPad delivery exceptions
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/dont-panic-over-these-ipad-delivery-exceptions/

Filed under: iPadLots of TUAW readers have written in today, worried about their iPad deliveries. Since they received shipment notices, many folks have been tracking their progress, and are now seeing messages like:

UPS INTERNAL ACTIVITY.
SHIPMENT IS HELD TO VERIFY COMMODITY DESCRIPTION WITH THE CUSTOMER FOR CORRECT CLASSIFICATION
"Your package has experienced an exception"

If you received one of these notices, you are not alone. Apple has taken similar measures in the past to make sure that deliveries do not arrive before the official release date. In fact, Boy Genius Report suggests that Apple is purposefully withholding clearance papers for the iPads to make sure that they are not delivered early.

As anxious as these next few days of waiting will be, and as nerve-racking as it is when this is your iPad, I fully expect that 99.99% of the iPads scheduled for delivery on Saturday [...]

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/iphoto-update-bonjour-print-services-available-for-windows-user/

Filed under: iLifeAlong with the iTunes update, iPhoto '09 users will also see an upgrade to 8.1.2 sitting in their Software Update right now -- namely to fix import and syncing issues with the iPhone, iPod and Apple TV. Canon printer and scanner users will also have the latest software for their products installed.

You can pick up the 12.9mb update right now in the Software Update app.

Windows users can also download Bonjour Print Services to discover and configure Bonjour-enabled printers using the Bonjour Printer Wizard.

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/itunes-updates-to-9-1-adds-syncing-for-ipad/

Filed under: iTunesWhen our mailbox explodes, you know an Apple release has come out -- and today has proven no different as iTunes updates to version 9.1, introducing many features that are compatible with the iPad including:

iPad syncing
Organizing and syncing books downloaded from iBooks
Rename, rearrange or remove Genius Mixes

All of those features were predicted yesterday, but it's nice to see them up and running in the application officially. iTunes 9.1 is available now via Software Update. We're ready for the iPad -- bring it on!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

10) Woz to buy two iPads
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/woz-to-buy-two-ipads/

Filed under: iPadNewsweek chatted with one Steve Wozniak the week before the iPad launch, and unsurprisingly, he's going all-in on the new device, and planning on picking up (at least) two, one WiFi and one 3G. He's ordered them up online already, but he says he'll still be stopping by an Apple Store on Friday evening, to "wait in line, just for fun." What a guy.

He actually says he didn't think the iPad was for him, since he already had an iPhone, but he says that after thinking about it, he really is excited about the bigger screen and browsing. He also is sure that it will be popular with students and even people who aren't necessarily computer literate. "The iPad simplifies things," he says wisely. "It's like a restart. We all say we want things to be simpler. All of a sudden we have this simple thing."

Sounds good. When the iPhone launched, Woz was at the San Jose Apple Store, we [...]

11) "Godfather" of iPod leaves Apple for greener pastures
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/godfather-of-ipod-leaves-apple-for-greener-pastures/

Filed under: iPod FamilyTony Fadell first envisioned a hard drive-based digital music player in the 1990s. He took his idea to Real Networks only to leave six weeks later after reports of in-fighting between himself and Real's CEO. After several years, Fadell took his idea to Steve Jobs and in 2001, Apple and Tony's idea made tech history.

Fadell was put in charge of the iPod/iPhone division in 2006 when he replaced Jon Rubinstein who left Apple to build the Pre with Palm. In 2008, Fadell officially stepped down from his role as division manager, but would remain at Apple to stay on as a special adviser to Steve Jobs.

That advisory roll ended yesterday. Fadell announced to the New York Times that he was leaving Apple to advise other companies with a focus on green technology. "My primary focus will be helping the environment by working with consumer green-tech companies," Fadell said. [...]

12) First Look: Neon Wallpaper for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/first-look-neon-wallpaper-for-ipad/

Newly "Beta 5 approved" according to AppVision Product Director Mark Chamberlain, Neon Wallpaper for iPad lets you create backdrops for your new device. As this video shows, you can combine elements of pictures and text to build your own personalized wallpaper. This, like so many App Store offerings, is going to be a "matter of taste" application. Either it does exactly what you want, namely to create strongly styled images, or it does not and you'll give it a pass.

The reason this video jumped out at me is how the AppVision developers took advantage of the iPad's large screen space to lay out a complex tool space. There's nothing really novel in terms of their choice of interactive elements (also called "controls") -- they are quite standard SDK offerings -- but the app showcases how many of them you can put onscreen at once while keeping the interface relatively [...]

Filed under: iPadEconomic hardship? What's that? If the recession affected you as much as it did that rock on your villa grounds, have I got an iPad for you. For a mere US$20,000 you can order the Diamond iPad.

The 64GB 3G iPad is modded by Mervis Diamond Importers and features 11.43 carats of diamonds set in a micro-pave styling. If you're the kind of guy that wants to one-up the friend who's always bragging about the latest tech he got on launch day, this is how you do it.

Besides, is $20,000 that much? Not when you compare it to the $3.2 million dollar gold iPhone. And the Diamond iPad's screen is so much larger...

Still not enough for you? Check out the gold-plated MacBook Air (a mere $5,000) and MacBook Pro ($1,200).

14) First Look: dPad drum sequencer for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/first-look-dpad-drum-sequencer-for-ipad/

I'm not a big drums person. I have no rhythm. I wouldn't know a drum kit if I tripped over one. Overly complicated interfaces confuse and scare me. Nevertheless, I thought I'd bring you this sneak peek video from Stu Helm, who ex-TUAWian Dave Chartier tells me is renown for "Agile and International Mac Podcast fame." I know that a certain subset of you (1) wear jeans with dark, rock & roll-themed tee-shirts, (2) do have some sort of functional relationship with music and rhythm, and (3) will actually enjoy playing with a dark, minimally designed, overly-complicated series of dots to build drum sequences.

Although it's pretty feature-limited for an app that's supposed to debut at US$3.99, the developers promise to keep enhancing the app going forward. They are looking to add in-app purchases for drum sound packs, a left-handed use mode, sequence saving and loading [...]

15) Apple App Store app launches on Facebook
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/apple-app-store-app-launches-on-facebook/

Filed under: App StoreNo, Apple isn't making Facebook apps. They've launched the App Store within a Facebook app. As the LA Times reports, the App Store app/fan page was created by Apple and Vitrue, a social media company, and allows Facebook users to browse the App Store's 170,000+ apps from right in Facebook. When Facebook users find an app they like, they simply click the "Get App" button and are taken to the App Store in iTunes. The App Store Facebook page first launched a little over two weeks ago, but this is the first we've heard of Vitrue's involvement.

From a viral marketing perspective, the best feature of this App Store in Facebook app is the "Share" button that sits next to every app. When a Facebook user finds an app they like, they can simply click the "Share" button and post a link to that app on their wall, or send a link to the app as a message. This mimics the [...]

Filed under: iPadWe were talking about this the other day in the virtual "back room" at TUAW -- when would the first university announce that they were going to give every one of their students an iPad?

It didn't take too long. Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania has announced that starting in Fall, 2010, every full-time student will get an iPad as part of the Seton Hill Griffin (that's the school's mascot) Technology Advantage Program. According to TUAW reader Dirk, who tipped us to this announcement, "Students will be able to download their textbooks to their iPads from the iBook Store. 18) 10.6.3 update makes Snow Leopard blood-free
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/10-6-3-update-makes-snow-leopard-blood-free/

Filed under: HumorWhen you compare the snow leopard that graces the front of the Mac OS X Snow Leopard box with the same picture that's in your Mac's built-in desktop pictures, you'll notice a very subtle difference... assuming you're running a version of Snow Leopard prior to 10.6.3, that is. In earlier versions of Snow Leopard, the big cat in the OS's desktop pictures has some slight flecks of blood on its lower jaw, and its lower teeth are also slightly visible. The same picture has been "cleaned up" for the front of the Snow Leopard retail box, as well as the install disc itself; the blood has been removed, and the snow leopard's lower teeth have been Photoshopped out. I guess Apple thought that the original image was a little too menacing for its marketing purposes?

20) More pics and video of possible next-gen iPhone display leaked
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/more-pics-and-video-of-possible-next-gen-iphone-display-leaked/

Filed under: iPhoneBack in February, we showed you some leaked pics from iResQ that were supposedly pictures of the next-gen iPhone's front face. Now, SmartPhone Medic, another iPhone repair outfit, has released pictures and video of what appears to be almost the exact same next-gen iPhone faceplate that iResQ showed off. SmartPhone Medic's video shows a bubble-wrapped part being removed from packaging labelled as "OEM 4G LCD & DIGITIZER," along with some other lettering that I can't quite make out, which either says "IPB," "IPS," or possibly something else entirely.

Like the faceplate iResQ revealed in February, this faceplate is approximately 1/4 of an inch longer than the faceplate from the current iPhone 3GS, but SmartPhone Medic's video makes it much clearer where this extra 1/4 inch is coming from. The display dimensions on the "4G" LCD are exactly the same as those on the 3GS, [...]

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/algoriddims-djay-remote-app-available-now/

Filed under: MusicOne of my favorite apps at Macworld Expo this past February was actually Algoriddim's djay 3 -- it's DJing software for the Mac that had a surprising amount of new features and fun UI elements even in one of the oldest and most-traveled of music software functions. One of the things I got to see during the hands-on was a tester version of an iPhone app they were working on, and now that app is finished and out on the App Store.

The price is US$4.99, which is actually a little high for a satellite application -- you must be running djay 3 on your Mac, and while there is a free trial, it would have been nice if they'd just released the iPhone app as a free add-on to the $50 app. But as you can see, it's a full controller for the app -- they have the vinyl artwork included, you can set cue points and tweak FX and audio levels from right within the app. Also, you can [...]

This is the kind of thing that's just clever enough to work once. Artist Andrew Fulton really wants an iPad (as do most of us), but he doesn't have the money to get one (likewise). So he's decided to try and sell some iPad-related art to raise money for his iPad. For as little as US$20 (just a duotone drawing) or as high as $125 (a full-color strip), you can commission and get an original piece of iPad-related artwork, drawn just for you. He's got a sample page of drawings, and while taste is always subjective, I have no doubt that he'll be able to get the iPad he wants.

Funny little idea, and maybe if you're willing to subsidize another iPad purchase and like his style, you can pick up a nice piece of original art for yourself. In the meantime, if anyone needs any iPad-related fiction, I'd be happy to put down a few thousand words for, say, $499 ...

1) American McGee's Crooked House, Zenonia 2, MLB World Series 2010 out now
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/american-mcgees-crooked-house-zenonia-2-mlb-world-series-2010/

Here are a few games of note that have shown up in the App Store recently. Game developer American McGee made his debut on the iPhone without much fanfare in the form of a game called Crooked House -- it's a puzzle game based on an old nursery rhyme that's as dripping with atmosphere as most of McGee's titles. If you're a puzzle fan or just want to see what an experienced game developer has done with Apple's platform, it's worth a look.

Zenonia 2 also showed up on the App Store recently -- it's the sequel to an action RPG from the iPhone's earlier days, and it adds in some character customization, a much larger world, and even some asynchronous multiplayer.

And finally, Major League Baseball is following up their extremely successful game-watching app with... a game. That's right, MLB Advanced Media has turned out an official baseball game, featuring all of the [...]

2) Obvious: Apple fans who own Apple products can't wait to buy the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/obvious-apple-fans-who-own-apple-products-cant-wait-to-buy-the/

Filed under: iPadThis is probably one for the obvious department, but we'll share it with you anyway. An NPD study released last week says that device awareness for the iPad is already very high (no duh), and that it's highest among 18-34 year old current Apple owners (double duh) with $100,000 or greater income. So basically, Apple fans with money to spend can't wait to buy the iPad. That, we believe, is the legendary triple duh.

But wait, there's more. The reason all of those current Apple owners want to buy the iPad? "Liking the Apple brand." They want to buy an Apple product because they like Apple products. The multitouch screen tied for biggest reason to buy, and NPD also says that 18-34 users are interesting in actually playing music and accessing the Internet from the device.

To be fair, those numbers are all cited as "awareness" -- only 9% of those surveyed said they were [...]

3) BBC iPhone apps on hold, maybe forever
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/bbc-iphone-apps-on-hold-maybe-forever/

Filed under: iPhoneTh British Broadcasting Corporation was expected to launch several iPhone apps with news and sports content in April but the apps are going to be a no-show.

Today, the BBC reports that the BBC Trust, which governs the 'Beeb,' has asked the broadcaster to postpone any plans for the apps while the business case is reviewed.

Several groups have criticized the BBC for wanting to distribute the free apps, most notably competitors who believe the BBC has an unfair advantage because it is funded by taxpayers who pay a yearly license fee to fund the broadcaster.

The BBC is among the biggest and most elite broadcasters in the world, and the apps were eagerly awaited. The corporation originally said it expected to build apps for the iPhone, and later Android and BlackBerry phones, but of course all of those plans are apparently on hold until this issue gets worked out.

4) iTunes 9.1 due soon with ebook support and auto bitrate conversion
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/itunes-9-1-due-soon-with-ebook-support-and-auto-bitrate-conversi/

Filed under: iTunesIt should come as no surprise that iTunes is very likely due for an update this weekend, thanks to the iPad launch. MacRumors has reported on the likely features of iTunes 9.1, with built-in support for ebooks being the most obvious addition to the increasingly misnamed iTunes. According to their source, the current "Audiobooks" entry in iTunes will be replaced with a "Books" section meant to encompass both audiobooks and ebooks. Content management for portables like the iPad and iPhone will also be changed in order to allow users to sync ebook content to their devices more easily.

Genius Mixes, the series of auto-generated playlists introduced in iTunes 9, will allow users to have a bit more control over them after the update. Currently the only functionality allowed in the Genius Mix interface is a simple play/pause over the album art; in iTunes 9.1, users will be [...]

5) WSJ: New iPhone coming this summer, and may be coming to Verizon
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/wsj-new-iphone-coming-this-summer-and-may-be-coming-to-verizon/

Filed under: iPhoneGet ready for the "VeriPhone." The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will be releasing a new iPhone this summer, and "appears to be working" on a model for Verizon Wireless. They claim it's a CDMA-based iPhone, and that mass production is slated to begin in September, but it's unclear when Apple will make the model available. The report notes that one Pegatron Technology Corp. (no relation to Deceptacon Megatron) is contracted to build the model.

There have been plenty of rumors already about a Verizon compatible iPhone, but this is the most credible report that we've seen, saying it's happening sometime this year.
Since its launch, the iPhone has seen two major refreshes, both occurring during the early summer period, and it appears that Apple will be keeping with this trend. However, if true, the release of a Verizon compatible iPhone marks a significant break [...]

6) Steve Jobs can't wait for your hands and fingers
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/steve-jobs-cant-wait-for-your-hands-and-fingers/

Filed under: HumorThere have been no shortage of jokes and sniggers about the "iPad" since it was announced, and it's getting more and more difficult to tell reality from a Saturday Night Live skit. Just the other day my non-technical wife asked me, in all sincerity, if "iPeriod" was a real Apple product (no, honey, just someone making a "joke" ... but there is an app for that.)

Apple isn't helping matters either. In the press release regarding the iPad's imminent arrival, Steve Jobs is quoted as saying the "iPad connects users with their apps and content in a far more intimate and fun way than ever before" and "[w]e can't wait for users to get their hands and fingers on it this weekend" in reference to the iPad's "revolutionary Multi-Touch[TM]."
Really, Steve? Really?

7) First Look: Ship Finder HD for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/first-look-ship-finder-hd-for-ipad/

We had a rather in-depth discussion about Ship Finder HD over in the TUAW back channel this morning, trying to decide whether or not to feature it in our First Look series. In the end, we determined that the cool functionality outweighed the iffy design and that it was just really a neat thing to be able to track ships around the world in real time.

And that's exactly what Ship Finder HD does. It uses AIS coverage from across the globe to position ships on maps. Lee Armstrong of pinkfroot, a small iPhone OS development house, was kind enough to share this video showing Ship Finder HD in action. He writes. "[T]he new iPad's form factor enables the app to be much more functional for just the casual user and the professional mariner."

Obviously, the application would benefit from the touch of a graphic designer, especially for the ship icons. The popover views could [...]

8) Apple hiring editorial managers for App Store
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/apple-hiring-editorial-managers-for-app-store/

Filed under: Apple, App StoreIf you've ever wanted to apply to work at Apple, now might be a good time to check out the job board over at TechCrunch. Late last week, Apple posted several editorial positions designed to help weed out the good apps from the bad in the App Store. Another position is geared toward promoting apps both on the desktop and in the App Store, leading TechCrunch to believe that there could be an App Store for OS X some time in the future.

Apple would not be breaking any new ground if the App Store is also pushed to the Mac. Bodega by freshcode was launched in August 2009 and has seen a growing number of users in the months since. With the concerns over editorial standards in the App Store that have plagued it since launch, I'd rather Apple focus on cleaning the App Store up before expanding it beyond the iPhone/iPad.TUAWApple hiring editorial managers for App [...]

9) Dashboard for iPad concept app
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/dashboard-for-ipad-concept-app/

TechCrunch found this sweet app by Carnegie Mellon student Rich Hong that puts Dashboard on your iPad. As you can see from the video above, it appears Hong has successfully ported Mac OS X's Dashboard directly to the iPad, though it is missing some of the iPhone's built-in apps like Calculator, Stocks, and Weather. Many speculated that, without a complete overhaul, these limited-functionality apps would look ridiculous on the iPad's large screen. Hong's solution gives those apps back to the iPad.

It is not known yet if Hong's Dashboard iPad app will appear in the iPad App Store, but I think it's fairly doubtful considering it mimics Apple software to a T. Still, it's a cool implementation and goes a long way to showing just what is possible on the iPad.TUAWDashboard for iPad concept app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 [...]

Filed under: iPadApple has posted new "guided tour" iPad videos meant to give details of the device's features. Unlike the original promo video which was a broad overview, the guided tours get into the specifics.

There are 11 videos in total, each explaining and demonstrating key iPad features, including Mail, Safari, Photos, Video, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, iBooks, Keynote, Pages and Numbers. There's also an option to watch all of the videos, one after the other. As you'd expect, they're very well done and feature best-case-scenarios; the connections are all fast, the photos are gorgeous, etc. The snapshots of my kids never look that good!

11) MobileMe and Dropbox, a study in opposites
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/mobileme-and-dropbox-a-study-in-opposites/

I have been using 1Password to move from "less secure" to "more secure" passwords. Like many people, I got into the bad habit of reusing a (relatively weak) password - let's call it "pa$$word" - on many different sites. I recently made a "New Smart Folder" in 1Password tasked with finding any site where my password is "pa$$word," and have been browsing the results.
That's when realized I was using the same password for both MobileMe and Dropbox. I was surprised how easy it was to change one of them, and what a complete pain it was to change the other.
To change my Dropbox password, I logged in, clicked a link labeled "Account" and then another labeled "Account Settings." Even a web novice could manage that. Next, I entered my old password, control clicked the "New Password" field, chose the 1Password submenu, and selected "Strong Password Generator," which [...]

12) First Look: Carter's Encyclopedia of Health and Medicine for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/first-look-carter-s-encyclopedia-of-health-and-medicine-for-ipa/

When I first heard about Carter's Encyclopedia of Health and Medicine, I thought: "Why aren't they just publishing this on the iBooks store?" After all, what can an app offer that an actual iBook won't? This video offers some answers. Instead of just a static book, this app provides searchable interactive skeletons (cute touch!), a topic-specific search history, and of course, all of the medical detail that a hypochondriac could wish for.

The video shown here was provided by Keith Ahern, the CEO of mogeneration, an Australian development company. I'm a little surprised that so many developers are going head-to-head with the iBooks arena, but with a niche area like a medical reference, it looks like Carter's has a chance to stand its ground. This encyclopedia offers a beautiful reference work, but it may struggle with its relatively limited feature set when compared [...]

13) First Look: iMockups for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/first-look-imockups-for-ipad/

Developers often carry around notebooks, which they use to sketch out their brilliant ideas for the next million-dollar iPhone or iPad app. The folks over at Endloop, a Canadian iPad development company with a few projects under its figurative belt, have been "coding like madmen" recently for their latest product, iMockups for iPad.

The idea behind iMockups is to give devs a way to quickly create wireframes and layouts for iPad, iPhone, and web apps. Any project can have multiple sketchbook pages associated with it, and developers can quickly add elements from a pad at the side of the screen.

Details about the app are very sketchy (no pun intended), so there's no word on when the app will be released to the App Store, what the price will be, or if there is any way to export or print the mockups that are created. However, iMockups looks like a good tool for those of [...]

14) Apple announces iPad Personal Setup service
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/apple-announces-ipad-personal-setup-service/

Filed under: iPadThe iPad will become available this Saturday, and Apple's got answers for customers with questions.

Apple announced today that their retail stores will offer a free Personal Setup service to iPad customers. New customers who buy an iPad at a retail store will be offered time with an employee to set up email accounts, install their favorite apps from the store and more. Additionally, all US Apple Stores will host special iPad workshops starting on Saturday morning.

While many of us feel we'll be OK on our own (especially the early adopters), there are a great number of customers who feel a bit uncertain about such a "novel" device (my parents are a prime example). It's nice to see Apple reaching out to those new users. http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/apple-boycotts-fox-news-because-of-glenn-beck/

Filed under: Apple CorporateA two-week old report by the Washington Post is only now gaining traction in the tech section. It appears that Apple has boycotted Fox News based on Glenn Beck and his ludicrous statements, including calling President Obama a racist and branding progressivism a "cancer."

"More than 200 companies have joined a boycott of Beck's program, making it difficult for Fox to sell ads," the Washington Post reports. "The time has instead been sold to smaller firms offering such products as Kaopectate, Carbonite, 1-800-PetMeds and Goldline International. A handful of advertisers, such as Apple, have abandoned Fox altogether. Network executives say they believe they could charge higher rates if the host were more widely acceptable to advertisers."

In the rush of iPad apps that we've been hearing about for the last few days, the genre that seems to be missing is Twitter clients. They're very popular in the iPhone App Store, so it's surprising that we haven't seen more screenshots or videos of Twitter apps for iPad. One of the first Twitter clients to be available on iPad (as of Saturday April 3rd) will be Twitepad, an app from InfoXenter that has already been approved by Apple.

The larger screen of the iPad gave InfoXenter an opportunity to build in an integrated Web browser, support for multiple columns of tweets or an unlimited number of Twitter accounts, and other features that look pretty darned good! Check out the video above for a quick look at Twitepad. http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/ipad-suppliers-forecast-shipments-of-8-10-million-for-calendar/

Filed under: iPadAnalyst Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley has published a research note forecasting shipments of 8 - 10 million iPads during calendar year 2010. That's significantly more than previous estimates, which showed shipments of about 5 million devices. The note, as reported in a WSJ All Things Digital post, still maintains a sales estimate of greater than 6 million iPads for the year, since shipments are not necessarily equal to sales (some production remains in distribution channels at year-end).

Huberty notes that investors who are bearish on the iPad say that it lacks a "killer app." She counters with speculation that the near-term target is for the sub-$800 notebook computer market, which currently appears to be in the range of 30 million units in the United States and 120 million units globally. 19) Brightcove announces support for HTML5 video

Brightcove, a Cambridge, MA-based company that specializes in online video provisioning for media companies and content providers (like TUAW and Engadget, for instance), has announced they will officially be supporting HTML5 video for their clients. Unlike Flash, HTML5 video (when encoded using the H.264 standard) will play on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Brightcove's new HTML5 video platform will automatically detect what device the user is running and dynamically switch between Flash and HTML5 players to suit the device's capabilities. For existing Brightcove content providers, all they need to do (assuming their clips are already in H.264 format) is change the embedding code in their webpages to immediately access the HTML5-savvy version. Brightcove automatically encodes each submission in seven different formats & bitrates for optimal client [...]

21) iPad shipments on their way!
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/ipad-shipments-on-their-way/

Filed under: iPadWe've been tipped by virtually everyone with an email address that their iPad pre-orders have begun shipping from Shenzhen, China using UPS Expedited service. While the iPad isn't set to be released for another 5 days, people shouldn't get their hopes up that they'll received their iPad before the official launch date. In the past Apple has worked with shipping carriers to hold product delivery until a certain date. Of course, accidents happen, and if you do happen to get yours a day or two early, let us know.

Just think, 5 days from now the Internet will be flooded with riveting iPad unboxing photos...

22) First Look: Kobo for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/29/first-look-kobo-for-ipad/

Check out those gorgeous pop-up menus! Long time TUAW friend Jim Dovey sent over this video for us to look at.

It's unclear whether Apple is going to (or, really, should) give this app a green light. KoboBooks is in direct competition with its iBooks reader and their support for Project Gutenberg eBooks. Though, if Apple does reject it, that would be a shame. Kobo is beautiful to look at. It is designed with obvious love, and a clear simple feature set. This is another app that I'm looking forward to trying, assuming that it makes it to App [...]
