1) How to use the updated Instapaper Pro with Tweetie 2
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/how-to-use-the-updated-instapaper-pro-with-tweetie-2/
Filed under: iPhone Instapaper Pro has been updated to version 2.2. Its creator, Marco Arment, wrote about some of the process behind adding a new feature called "Return to Position." If you enjoy hearing developers sweat the details, it's a great read. There's also a full changelog for those who want more details on the new version.
I've been using Instapaper Pro a lot more recently after making a few changes to my workflow on my iPhone and Mac. I set up the "Read Later" bookmarklet installed properly from the Instapaper website. (An even easier method is to use Quix which I mentioned the other day.) I also started following the "companion site" Marco started especially for Instapaper called "Give Me Something To Read" which is a selection of interesting articles hand-picked by Richard Dunlop-Walters.
The last step was setting up Tweetie 2 on the iPhone to send web pages I [...]

2) Sam and Max voted as next Telltale franchise on the Mac
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/sam-and-max-voted-as-next-telltale-franchise-on-the-mac/
Filed under: Gaming, Software
When Telltale Games kicked off their Mac revolution at Macworld a few weeks ago, they also set up a poll on their website where players could vote on the next franchise in their company to get a full release on the Mac. The vote is now over, and the Sam and Max franchise was chosen as the next group of games to see a full Mac release. The original characters were created by Steve Purcell a few decades ago, but since then, the franchise has created a storied gaming history, starting at LucasArts and moving on to Telltale's classic titles. The series of point-and-click adventures is known for its stories and humor, and it's definitely a worthwhile choice by fans.
Rumor has it that there's a brand new Sam and Max season (the games are released in "seasons" of smaller episodes) around the corner -- we're hoping to see Telltale at GDC 2010 next week, so we'll [...]

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/mlb-com-at-bat-2010-out-now/
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, iPhone, App StoreBaseball season is almost here (Spring training starts this week), and with it comes a brand new version of Major League Baseball's great iPhone app. MLB.com At Bat 2010 is out now on the App Store, and for $14.99, you get the same great app you bought last year: live scores, streaming audio of all the games around the league, and available video of games via an in-app purchase.
There's no lite version yet, but last year MLB released a free version sans audio and video, so if you just want the scores, you can wait and see when that one shows up.
Meanwhile, if you want official baseball info beamed straight to your phone all year long, this app is the way to go. While there are definitely lots of other apps that will hook you up with scores and alerts for a much cheaper price, the MLB app is a quality way to get information straight [...]

4) Dear Aunt TUAW: How do I use my Apple TV in the car?
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/dear-aunt-tuaw-how-do-i-use-my-apple-tv-in-the-car/
Filed under: Multimedia, Apple, Apple TVDear Aunt TUAW,
I'm planning a road trip for the summer. We'll be driving for 3-4 days, then spending a couple of months in a rental house before heading back. Thinking about keeping the family sane, especially during the drive, I thought, "Why not hook up the Apple TV to the Composite inputs (meant for video games) in the minivan?" That way, we'd have entertainment on the drive, then we could hook it up to the TV in the rental house as well.
One thing I can't figure out, however, is how to power the Apple TV in the car. Are there car adapters that might work?
Love & Kisses,
Narcema
Darling Narcema,
I'm going to give you the answer you asked for but then I'm going to give you the answer you need. Ready for that? Okay, let's go.
If you really, really, really want to use your Apple TV in the car, what you need to be looking for is called a [...]

5) iBookstore expanding internationally ... eventually
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/ibookstore-expanding-internationally-eventually/
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Retail, iPadThe announcement of the iBookstore wasn't particularly surprising -- analysts had expected such a move from Apple for months. What was somewhat surprising was that as of the initial announcement of the iPad and its tie-in with the iBookstore, there were no announced plans for international versions of Apple's e-book marketplace. Up until today, the only officially announced venue for the iBookstore has been the United States.
According to MacRumors, a new job listing has been posted on Apple's website for "Manager, iBooks Asia Pacific & Canada." Part of the managerial position's role includes being "the primary person responsible for building the book business in Asia Pacific and Canada" -- for now, "Asia Pacific" is only loosely defined as "Australia, New Zealand, and other countries." It stands to reason that Apple will eventually want to [...]

6) Forget the "Crackberry": Stanford students are addicted to their iPhones
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/forget-the-crackberry-stanford-students-are-addicted-to-their/
Filed under: Odds and ends, Surveys and Polls, iPhoneYears ago, when the Blackberry started gaining traction among business users, people found themselves using the device so much that the nickname "Crackberry" was invented to describe how addicting the device was. According to a recent survey of 200 Stanford University students, the iPhone is just as addictive as the Blackberry, if not more so. Nearly a third of Stanford students surveyed worried about becoming addicted to their iPhones, while more than a third had heard complaints they were using the devices too much.
The survey gives some insight into why students found their iPhones so addicting: 74 percent of students surveyed said they 'felt cool" when they got an iPhone, but more importantly, a quarter of surveyed students said their iPhones felt like "an extension of their brain or their being."
I can definitely vouch for the [...]

7) Developer quacks about 'minimal user functionality,' but it's not a new rule
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/developer-quacks-about-minimal-user-functionality-but-its-no/
Filed under: Apple, Developer, iPhone, App Store
Since the early days of the App Store, it's been a virtual Wild West out there -- people can release apps that do whatever they can imagine, from a virtual cowbell to a mirror, silly as the functionality may be. Still, there has always been a (very low) hurdle for the least an app can do; once again, Apple has rejected an app for the reason of "minimal user functionality." To be clear, despite what you may be reading elsewhere, this is not a new rule, but one developer thought that his rejection under a long-standing reviewer's option was a reason to raise a little heck.
The creator of the just-rejected app (which, for the record, shows a picture of a duck and makes the iPhone quack like a duck) emailed TechCrunch looking for a little justice, and all he got from them was sarcasm. We don't have anything he'll want to hear, either: with [...]

9) Netflix survey inquires about iPhone streaming, even though CEO says 'not coming soon'
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/netflix-survey-inquires-about-iphone-streaming-even-though-ceo/
Filed under: Video, Internet Tools, iPhone, iPad
Today's movies-in-motion tidbit comes courtesy of Mike over at the Hacking Netflix blog, who let us know that some of his readers are receiving the popup survey above. It inquires as to the reader's interest in a form of Netflix streaming (Wi-Fi only, unsuprisingly) for the iPhone. That's the same streaming for iPhone/iPad that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings called "not a priority" and "not near-term" as recently as last month.
While it's tempting to see this survey as a sign of an imminent iPhone or iPad app full of streaming movie delights -- assuming such an app would make it into the App Store through Apple's "user confusion" gauntlet, which is by no means a sure bet -- don't throw away your iTunes gift cards just yet. The first hints of Netflix's upcoming Wii streaming capability, which is due to launch sometime this spring, also [...]

10) Macmillan trying to sell readers 'hardcover' ebooks
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/macmillan-trying-to-sell-readers-hardcover-e-books/
Filed under: Retail, Software, Internet, iPad John Siracusa drew my attention to an article by Macmillan CEO John Sargent on the agency model, availability and price, in which he says that the company actually plans to keep their hardcover/paperback separation even while selling ebooks. While new hardcover ebooks will sell for $14.99 and $12.99 ("a tremendous discount from the price of the printed hardcover books"), the company will aim to sell "ebook editions of paperback new releases" for as low as $6.99. As Siracusa goes on to say, "now let us all sit back and ponder the concept of 'paperback' and 'hardcover' ebooks."
Macmillan is sticking with an old pricing scheme even in a brand new marketplace. Just what exactly makes the difference between a "hardcover ebook" and a "paperback ebook"? Read on to find out.
The first question is: "Why would someone buy a hardcover book?" I can [...]

11) Pachter: Apple will have a game console soon
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/pachter-apple-will-have-a-game-console-soon/
Filed under: Hardware, Apple, Apple TV, App Store, iPad
Michael Pachter is probably the most visible gaming industry analyst out there -- while he's not always right about his predictions and insight on the video game industry, he does usually know what he's talking about, and he's definitely got the ear of a lot of investors. And so when he says that Apple is planning to turn the Apple TV into a game console, people listen.
In fact, that's exactly what he said on his online show last week -- he says that "by accident," Apple has "become a serious gaming company." Steve Jobs never really was interested in gaming, and yet, because the iPod touch has really jumped into gaming with the App Store (and the iPad will follow), Apple will go for games more and more as a way to sell their hardware. He also says the Apple TV will get hooked up to the App Store sooner or later, and that it [...]

12) Browser security: "The main thing is not to install Flash!"
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/browser-security-the-main-thing-is-not-to-install-flash/
Filed under: Odds and ends, Internet You may have noticed that I'm not a huge fan of Flash. My feelings pre-date the iPhone/iPad debate about whether or not Flash should be included on those devices. Even back when I was using Windows and Opera, one of the features I used most often was "Disable Plugins" -- which was really another way of saying "Disable Flash," and I do that these days in Safari using ClickToFlash.
Flash lovers usually talk about how many games are only available using Flash. Flash haters usually talk about performance issues, especially on the Mac. Adobe tries to make the argument that not including Flash is bad for users' freedom of choice.
When it comes to browser security, Charlie Miller says that it's all about Flash. More specifically, avoiding Flash.
Miller, who has won the Pwn2Own contest two years running, was interviewed by Italian site OneITSecurity. They [...]

13) Apple sues HTC for patent violations
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/apple-sues-htc-for-patent-violations/
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Odds and ends, iPhoneIt's a festival of lawsuits. This morning Apple has announced it is going after Taiwan based phone giant HTC for infringing on 20 patents concerning the iPhone user interface and the underlying hardware and architecture. The lawsuit was filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court in Delaware.
"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."
Although the Google Android phone is not mentioned in the lawsuit, HTC makes several Android handsets, and the touchscreen models look quite a bit like the iPhone screen. HTC has not yet reacted to the lawsuit.

14) Despite legal threats, Apple stair back on Ebay
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/02/despite-legal-threats-apple-stair-back-on-ebay/
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Retail, Odds and endsA former Apple Store employee has defied legal threats and re-listed a broken stair on Ebay.
In 2008, three broken stairs were removed from the spiral staircase in the Fifth Avenue Apple retail store in New York. Former employee Mark Burstiner asked the Seele GmbH employees who were hauling them away if he could have one, and they said yes, according to Mark's story on Gizmodo. After storing it at his place for a while, he decided to put it up for auction on Ebay.
Shortly thereafter, Seele contacted Mark to claim ownership of the stair and demand that the auction be taken down and the stair returned to them. Mark removed the auction but refused to return the stair, claiming that it had become his property.
Now, the Ebay listing is back up. As of this writing, the bid is at US$9,9500. It's only a 3-day auction, so get your bid in [...]

What can I say? Who didn't see this one coming? Hip Handmaidens, a company that sells handcrafted wares "born out of a bizarre group of talented housewives," has created the iMaxi -- the only Apple iPad case with protective wings. You know, I could describe the case to you, but I think Hip Handmaidens have hit all the puns and innuendo possible:
"With its durable vinyl outer layer and plush, quilted-cotton sleeve, the iMaxi helps keep your iPad clean and dry. Plus, the iMaxi's Velcro-latched, advanced wing design wraps snugly around your device, so your iPad always stays where it should. Best of all, it shields it from all those unsightly and embarrassing data leaks that would make any motherboard worry!"
Want to hear something even more disturbing? They offer the option of a special blood red threading for that "lived in" look.
