1) iPhone icons in felt keychain form
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/iphone-icons-in-felt-keychain-form/

Filed under: Hardware, Cult of Mac, iPhoneUnfortunately these guys are already sold out (though maybe there'll be more soon), but I'm still posting them here just to gaze on their awesomeness -- Etsy user Rabbitrampage put together these six iPhone icon keychains (well, five iPhone and one Finder) out of felt, thread, and fiber fill. I think they look great, though it would be nice to have even more custom icons available. I guess if you want a special icon keychain made of your own app (ahem), you'll have to make it yourself.

This same Etsy user also enjoys wrapping your iPhone in felt recreations of old retro items like Game Boys and even a VHS tape. I've already got a case on my iPhone, but if I didn't have one yet, I'd definitely pick up one of these.

2) Apple paying back bonuses on cost of defective 27-inch iMacs
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/apple-paying-back-bonuses-on-cost-of-defective-27-inch-imacs/

Filed under: Retail, iMac, AppleGizmodo is reporting that Apple has begun refunding up to an extra 15% of the purchase price of the 27-inch iMac to those customers who bought defective units.

The news broke yesterday with a UK-based Apple Authorized Service Provider/Reseller claiming that Apple is out of 27" screens in Europe, and they're dealing with a waiting list of customers already. So they're now offering up (to only certain customers so far, not an official policy) not only a full refund, but an extra 15% on top of the price, roughly $300 on the cost of a $2000 iMac.

Gizmodo also points out that the refund doesn't include sales tax or shipping costs, so some of the 15% covers that as well. You won't be able to make money on this, but Apple is apparently offering up a small bonus to customers inconvenienced by the issues.

Earlier this week Apple released another firmware [...]

3) Steve looked healthier at iPad event
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/steve-looked-healthier-at-ipad-event/

Filed under: Odds and ends, Steve Jobs, Apple
MacDailyNews points out that not many bloggers or journalists covered the issue of Steve's health at last week's Apple event, but I'd argue that it wasn't really a huge story -- the guy is doing his job, and while we definitely want to make sure he's healthy, his well-being is not really for us to judge. That said, they put a picture of Steve from last September up side by side with a pic from last week's event, and it's true that His Steveness does look a little more colorful. Given that he's probably not going to share much information with us about his health issues (which is completely his right, obviously), we're at least happy that it seems he's a little more hale.

Needless to say, we only hope he's feeling better, as Apple just isn't the same company without him. We do know he's personally invested in the iPad, if the rumors are to [...]

4) Xcode 101: Installing the 3.2 SDK alongside the 3.1.1 SDK
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/xcode-101-installing-the-3-2-sdk-alongside-the-3-1-1-sdk/

Filed under: Software, Apple, Developer, SDKAre you doing production work and beta work at the same time? Need to install more than one SDK at once? If you've downloaded the 3.1.3 SDK and need to install it on the same system as the 3.2 beta SDK, you'll want to use the Xcode installer's destination chooser.

When given the option of where to install, click on the Developer folder to reveal the pop-up shown here to the right. To create a new folder/location choose "Other..." and use the standard file browser to create and select that location.

I personally use a named folder for all beta installs. My 3.2 beta is located in /Developer32 and I used the standard /Developer path for my 3.1.3 SDK update. Both SDKs coexist in peace with each other, although I did have to assign separate key macros (I'm a Quickeys addict) for normal Xcode and Interface Builder (in /Developer/Applications) and [...]

5) iPhone dev to make an app in one week -- live on the web
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/iphone-dev-to-make-an-app-in-one-week-live-on-the-web/

It sounds like the premise for a new reality show -- a developer writes an iPhone app in one week while the world watches.

That's exactly what Sahil Lavingia is planning to do starting on Sunday, February 7th. Lavingia is the developer behind Color Stream and the Twizzle Twitter client [iTunes Links], and he'll be posting updates to keep us all apprised of his progress at his One Week App blog.

On the blog, Lavingia will be posting screenshots of his coding, timelapse movies (sorry, no streaming video of Lavingia at work), and other notes about his work as he moves forward. Lavingia is a realist -- he knows that he could create an amazing new app, or he could fail to finish his work in the allotted time. We don't know what he's planning on coding, either. Perhaps it will be a game, maybe a design tool, or something else altogether.

If you are fascinated [...]

6) Do you, MacBook Pro, take this Hermione to be your lawfully wedded wife?
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/do-you-macbook-pro-take-this-hermione-to-be-your-lawfully-wedd/

Filed under: Humor, Odds and ends, Macbook Pro
We're not sure about the authenticity of this video or if this is truly love at first iSight, but Macenstein featured the story about this young British woman, 24 year-old Hermione Way, who unofficially married her MacBook Pro "Alex" on January 31st.

Yes, that's correct. Unofficially married, because the U.K. (and probably every other country on the planet) refuses to recognize the legality of human / computer marriages. Hermione, who just happens to be the bloggess behind Techfluff.tv, would love to change all that. Her video blog entry shows both Hermione and Alex, a fascinating treatise on human / computer relations, and even has her Mum saying that she "...just wants Hermione to be happy." There's even talk of children in the future; the flesh and blood type, not little iPads running around.

Whether you're a romantic at heart who [...]

7) MaComfort brings a little Mac back to your PC
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/macomfort-brings-a-little-mac-back-to-your-pc/

Filed under: OS, Software, Freeware, Apple
Let's face it -- as much as we love our Macs, sometimes you've got to use a PC, whether that be for work or at a friend's house, or just for playing some games. But when you absolutely must use Windows, maComfort can make the transition easier. It's a free Windows application (with some premium options) that brings all of the nice software things you appreciate on your Mac back to your PC. It's got a QuickLook-style feature, translates the Windows key to all of your Command hotkeys, and even replicates familiar Mac features like one-button volume control and Spaces and Active Corners. And the app also has a add-on system, so you can download extra features like homemade Docks and shadows just like on your Mac back home.

Of course, it's not perfect -- QuickLook only works in Explorer, not everywhere, and obviously all of the less-superficial [...]

8) Rumor: AT&T outbid Verizon for the iPad data plan
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/rumor-atandt-outbid-verizon-for-the-ipad-data-plan/

Filed under: Portables, Software, AppleFox News writer Clayton Morris was also wondering just why Apple went with AT&T yet again for the iPad data plan, but it turns out things between the two companies weren't quite so cut and dry as Jobs made us believe on stage. He says that inside sources at Verizon still insist that they've been talking with Apple about handling some of the data service, and he even says that they've mentioned not only an iPhone set up to work with Verizon later this year, but an iPad as well.

Rumor also has it that AT&T simply outbid the other cellphone providers for becoming the official iPad data service, and that makes sense: that $29.99 unlimited plan is a heck of a deal for consumers, but then again, it'll bring in a heck of a lot of business for AT&T (who should have already been in hot water for their service outages, and will probably end up in more, [...]

9) Report: Apple signs new iPhone manufacturer, rumored to work on CDMA iPhone
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/report-apple-signs-new-iphone-manufacturer-rumored-to-work-on/

Apple has reportedly signed up with a new manufacturer in China to help produce the next generation of the iPhone -- Pegatron will be joining Foxconn in putting together parts for Apple's next handheld unit, we hear courtesy of the always talkative "industry sources." The company has been rumored to be working with Apple before, when it was suggested that they'd be working on a smaller version of the iPhone designed to work on Verizon's CDMA network. Officially, Pegatron hasn't confirmed any agreement with Apple, but they have said that they plan to substantially increase their output in 2010.

And this might just be part of a good 2010 for Pegatron -- the company is also working on parts for Microsoft's Natal controller, rumored to be releasing this coming holiday season. As for what they'll be making for Apple, we'll have to wait and see what gets [...]

10) Slingplayer Mobile will finally be working on the AT&T 3G network
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/slingplayer-mobile-will-finally-be-working-on-the-atandt-3g-networ/

Filed under: Multimedia, Video, iPhoneWell, that took a while. AppleInsider is reporting that AT&T has now agreed to let SlingPlayer for iPhone [US$30, iTunes link] stream over the 3G network.

When the app was released last May, there was great moaning that the SlingPlayer Mobile app only worked on a Wi-Fi connection. That was in contrast to other versions of the Sling app running on other phones like the BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and some Palm devices -- all of which were allowed on the AT&T network.

AT&T now says they have worked with the Sling Media developers, and found ways to reduce the bandwidth footprint. Getting it all up and running will require a new version of the Sling App, which should appear shortly. The app will be a free upgrade for current owners. The posted version was released in August of last year.

A source at Sling Media told me this morning they were glad [...]

11) 10 reasons to pass on the iPad? TUAW fact check
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/10-reasons-to-pass-on-the-ipad-tuaw-fact-check/

Filed under: iPod Family, Portables, Odds and endsOver at TechRepublic's 10 Things blog, Debra Littlejohn Shinder has posted an article called "10 reasons why I'll be passing on the iPad." Some of her reasoning is sound, but quite a few of her points are easy to refute. It's worth looking at her post and the points it tries to make, because it's indicative of a widespread misunderstanding of not only the iPad's capabilities, but also its intended consumer base.

1. There's no physical keyboard

digg_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/10-reasons-to-pass-on-the-ipad-tuaw-fact-check/"
Debra's correct that the iPad has no physical keyboard. But what she fails to account for is that not only will Apple sell a keyboard dock for the iPad, the device can also be paired with any existing Bluetooth keyboard. Apple's reasoning for not including a physical keyboard on the iPad is even more [...]

Filed under: Features, Troubleshooting, Ask TUAWWelcome back to Ask TUAW, our weekly troubleshooting Q&A column. This week we've got questions about MacBook power adapters, Windows 7 in Boot Camp and virtualization in general, resetting the Mac Setup Assistant, the next iWork refresh, and more.

As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Leave your questions for next week in the comments section at the end of this post. When asking a question, please include which machine you're using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we'll assume you're running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify), or if it's an iPhone-related question, which iPhone version and OS version you have.

13) HarperCollins pressuring Amazon to hike Kindle prices
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/harpercollins-pressuring-amazon-to-hike-kindle-prices/

Filed under: Hardware, Multimedia, Retail, Rumors, AppleThe iPad is still a few months away from actual release, but it already has publishers scrambling to be in the right place when the revolution comes. First, Amazon gave in to Macmillan's bid to raise prices on their own store, and now HarperCollins is putting the pressure on that same site to raise eBook prices from $9.99 up to $14.99 or higher. Amazon finds itself in between a rock and an iPad -- if they don't give in to publishers' demands, they could find themselves abandoned for an exclusive Apple deal, but if they do raise prices, sales will start dropping even before the iPad appears. Jobs predicted about this much last week in an interview with Walt Mossberg, saying that publishers would run afoul of the Amazon store, and Jobs would be more than happy to pick them up in iBooks.

But the real question is: how much will Apple [...]

14) Pocket Sitar is a virtual sitar for the iPhone
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/04/pocket-sitar-is-a-virtual-sitar-for-the-iphone/

Filed under: Software, iPhone, App Store, MusicNPR posted the other day about an app that promised to simulate a sitar, the stringed instrument used mainly in Indian music. So just for you, dear readers, we downloaded it [iTunes link] and gave it a shot. The verdict? If you can already play the sitar, you'll probably find it a reasonable approximation. Just like the guitar simulators on the iPhone, there are various strings on screen that you can "strum," and the notes are labeled under the virtual strings. As for actually learning the sitar, however, you're probably out of luck. There's one instructional page, and links to eHow videos, but there's nothing solid in terms of actually learning the device.

And unfortunately, the app just feels pretty cheap -- there's a large part of the screen taken up with a one-hit sitar sound, and quite a few times, we'd try striking different strings [...]
