1) 15-inch MacBook Pros MIA on BestBuy.com, long-awaited refresh really, truly coming April 13th?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/15-inch-macbook-pros-mia-on-bestbuy-com-long-awaited-refresh-re/

iPhone, iPhone, iPhone... wait, what's that? You're still pining for those refreshed, possibly Core i5- / i7-equipped MacBook Pros that have been long rumored? If a source close to Australian MacWorld has any merit, we'll finally be seeing updates to the laptop line -- Pro and Air, allegedly -- this Tuesday, April 13th. No word on what the new models would feature if true, but without an event all its own, the best we can expect is probably a spec boost. Best Buy seems to adding some fuel to the fire, first by showing a proverbial mark of death in its database last month, and now by making the 15-inch model unavailable on BestBuy.com. Undoubtedly the retailer's waiting for a new shipment of potent portables, but the question remains, what'll they run under the hood.

2) Ask Engadget: best method or product for organizing wall outlets?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/ask-engadget-best-method-or-product-for-organizing-wall-outlets/

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from deciBels, who is sick and tired of only being able to utilize 4 of the 7 outlets in a conventional power strip. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I am absolutely dying to know what the best product(s) are to maximize and organize power outlets. I have 9 cables at one outlet (big nest of cables). I ran out of space there and had to go to a completely different wall to find 2 more vacancies. That's without actually plugging in everything I would like to. I'm not a fan of having to compromise but when it comes to outlets, I'm being beat! Help me Engadget!"

3) Apple announces WebKit2 with Chrome-like process splitting
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/apple-announces-webkit2-with-chrome-like-process-splitting/

Apple's big announcement of the day might have been iPhone OS 4, but another reveal that's gone slightly under the radar might actually turn out to be a bigger deal: WebKit2, which now runs browser elements as separate processes, much like Google Chrome. Actually, Apple's devs say it goes a little farther than Chrome, since the process model is built into the foundation so other non-Safari clients can use it. That's pretty wild stuff, considering how prevalent WebKit has become across the mobile space and the fact that Chrome itself uses the rendering engine. No word on when this will all go final, but hey -- it's all open source, and you can actually grab Mac and Windows binaries right now. 4) Apple's iPhone lockdown: apps must be written in one of three languages, Adobe in the hurt locker
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/apples-iphone-lockdown-apps-must-be-written-in-one-of-three-la/

Apple's already got a veritable novella describing things you can't do with the iPhone as a developer -- create apps that execute their own code is the biggie, obviously, blocking technologies Flash and Java in the absence of a loophole -- but it seems they've locked down the ecosystem just a little further today with the release of the iPhone OS 4 beta SDK. Check out this snippet from the developer's agreement:
Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are [...]

5) iPhone OS 4.0 spotlight lets you directly search web, Wikipedia
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/iphone-os-4-0-spotlight-lets-you-directly-search-web-wikipedia/

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_OS_4_0_spotlight_lets_you_directly_search_web_Wiki'; Apple did quite a bit today bringing its iPhone OS up to feature parity (and sometimes beyond) when compared with other modern smartphone platforms, and here's one piece not discussed today that we've been long wanting: web and Wikipedia search directly from Spotlight. WebOS and Windows Phone 7 have had it since inception, and Android's had it since Donut, and we're pretty happy to say that our OS 4.0-equipped iPhone is now also among the ranks, just 13 months after it first got a search bar. There you have it, folks, iPhone Spotlight is now useful.

6) Creative debuts ZEN X-Fi Style, ZEN Style portable media players
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/creative-debuts-zen-x-fi-style-zen-style-portable-media-players/

Creative isn't exactly breaking the mold with these, but the company has just announced its new ZEN X-Fi Style and ZEN Style series of portable media players, which both keep things fairly simple and inexpensive. The ZEN X-Fi Style (pictured above) is the higher end of the two, with it packing a 2.4-inch non-touchscreen display, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of storage, a built-in speaker, microphone and TV out, and the usual X-Fi sound enhancement -- not to mention support for "playback" of downloaded RSS feeds, but no other apparent internet capabilities. It's joined by the ZEN Style 100 and 300, which each pack a 1.8-inch display and 4GB, 8GB or 16GB of storage, along with an added speaker and FM radio on the ZEN Style 300 (pictured after the break). Look for the ZEN X-Fi Style to start shipping on April 14th at prices between $80 and $170, while the two ZEN Style players are available right now [...]

7) Sanyo's DMX-CG100 and DMX-GH1 camcorders do 1080p up in here
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/sanyos-dmx-cg100-and-dmx-gh1-camcorders-do-1080p-up-in-here/

Another day, another little camcorder that can fill up memory cards quick with 1080p on tap. Sanyo's DMX-CG100 and DMX-GH1 can record 30fps progressively at 12Mbps, or 60 at 16Mbps if you don't mind interlacing, through 5x optical zoom lenses with two separate ranges: 40mm at the widest end and 480mm on the telephoto side. Both offer SDXC support for up to 64GB of storage and the only real difference between them is design, with the CG100 (above) offering a vertical style and the GH1 (after the break) going for the more traditional (and apparently less comfortable) horizontal design. Both start shooting in Japan next week, but Sanyo's not saying how much you'll need to pay for admission to this party. 8) Lenovo ThinkPad W701, W701ds and dual-core X100e shipping to trackpoint lovers
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/lenovo-thinkpad-w701-w701ds-and-dual-core-x100e-shipping-to-trackpoint-lovers/

Not getting a rest there, huh, Lenovo? On the heels of the availability of the IdeaPad S10-3s and C200, big L has also been prepping to box and send off some fresh ThinkPads. If the 17-inch, Wacom-equipped W701 and W701ds (dual screen) caught your eye when they were first introduced two months ago we hope you set aside a chunk of change -- the Core i7 / NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M rig rings up at $3,668.00. Add in that dual screen and you're up to $4,343. On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, that X100e which we recently reviewed is available with a 1.6GHz AMD Turion Neo X2 Dual-Core CPU. We doubt that'll do the sub-four hour battery life any good, but if power in a small package is what you're after it's definitely worth a click on the source link. As for that picture of the X100e with a floppy disk that really has nothing to do with the news, we just came across it on Lenovo's [...]

10) T-Mobile's myTouch Slide earns its FCC wings?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/t-mobiles-mytouch-slide-earns-its-fcc-wings/

Seeing HTC leak a shot of a product through a confidential FCC filing is about as rare as a confirmed yeti sighting, so you can imagine our excitement with this fresh meat that just landed in the Fed's files today. What is it, exactly? Well, it's a smartphone running 3G on WCDMA Band IV, which -- for those who don't have their bands memorized -- is the AWS spectrum that T-Mobile uses. In other words, we'd bet our bottom dollar that this is the rumored Android-equipped myTouch Slide that we're looking at here -- and with a Spring launch window having been rumored in the past, this certification looks like it's running right on time. 11) iPhone OS 4 hands-on (updated with video!)
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/iphone-os-4-hands-on/

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_OS_4_hands_on_Engadget'; Okay, so we're currently holding our breath while the developer preview of iPhone OS 4 installs on our 3GS -- a process that seems to be, uh, not going so well, but we wanted to share these quick shots we took from the simulator in the meantime. The dock is now 3D, like the one in Snow Leopard and on the iPad, multitasking works just like you'd expect -- you can swipe left and right to see more open apps -- and the Game Center app is present, although not functional. There's also Events and Faces in the Photos app, which you'd expect after the iPad version got them. We've got our fingers crossed that our latest restore attempt is going to work, so check back in a few for a video walkthrough, but hit the gallery below in the meantime!

12) iPhone OS 4 versus Windows Phone 7: the tale of the tape
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/iphone-os-4-versus-windows-phone-7-the-tale-of-the-tape/

So now that Apple's finally addressed (well, sort of addressed) the 800-pound gorilla known as multitasking, it's time to take a good, hard look at how iPhone OS 4 stacks up against Redmond's completely redesigned mobile monster that's destined to hit handsets toward the end of the year. Though the two companies have taken vastly different paths to get to where they are with their mobile strategies today, there are some striking similarities between the platforms; take that multitasking we already mentioned, for example -- both iPhone OS and Windows Phone are looking to keep processor and battery utilization to a minimum by putting the emphasis on managed services for background apps rather than just letting them run roughshod over your fragile hardware. Of course, there are some striking differences, too -- so let's have a look, shall we?Continue reading iPhone OS 4 versus Windows [...]

13) Alienware M11x getting NVIDIA Optimus and new Intel CPUs this summer?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/alienware-m11x-getting-nvidia-optimus-and-new-intel-cpus-this-su/

Either someone at Alienware is reading our reviews or the engineers over there happen to be as smart as us. What was our top complaint about the M11x? The lack of NVIDIA Optimus to automatically switch between the IGP and the GT335M GPU to help save battery life, of course. Well, if Notebook Review forum commenter Darkhan, who apparently has some affiliation with Alienware, is to be believed the company is working on adding just that to an updated M11x. Said to be released in the June / July time frame, the refreshed 11.6-inch laptop will apparently also be getting some new Intel Core 2010 CPUs. It does seems a bit early to update a product that started shipping just a month ago, but we wouldn't put it past those crazy gamers. Dell wouldn't comment on the rumor, so the only thing we can promise at this time is that we'll be keeping an ear to the ground on this one.Alienware M11x getting [...]

Just in case you prefer a slimmer profile to your television viewing experience without all that 3D nonsense, Mitsubishi has also refreshed its Unisen LCD HDTVs. All the new models have StreamTV a.k.a. VUDU Apps built in, plus playback from USB devices, and edge LED backlighting. While the LT-55154 drops a few speakers (if you brought your own), the step-up 164 line is sized from 40- to 55-inches including 16 speakers built in, integrated WiFi, Bluetooth streaming and more while the top of the line 265 models add two more speakers to the mix and upgrade to 240 Hz motion, an iPhone remote control app plus a few other configuration tweaks for the high end. Check after the break for prices (between $1,699 & $3,199) and more specs, though exact shipping information is still TBA.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/ctl-gets-into-the-tablet-teaser-game-with-a-video-of-the-2go-pc/

Well, what do we have here? Indeed, it is another Windows 7, Atom-powered tablet, but this one happens to be from CTL, reputable maker of those Classmate PCs. Unlike some others CTL's done its teaser video of its 2go PC Slate just right by revealing most of the vitals including the full specs and availability. In case you don't feel like hitting the read more link to watch the short clip, here's the Cliff Notes version: The 10-inch capacitive touchscreen slate is powered by a 1.6GHz Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, and has two USBs and a 2-megapixel webcam. That's right, a netbook with its keyboard chopped off. The software overlay that you see in the blurry picture above is actually Intel's Blue Dolphin interface for the Classmate PC, so perhaps the company is planning to use that to skin the underlying Windows 7 Home Premium OS. http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/barnes-and-noble-nook-seen-lying-in-wait-at-best-buy/

We've already had a pretty clear indication that the Barnes & Noble Nook would be going on sale at Best Buy soon, and we now have our firmest evidence yet courtesy of a tipster who has found Nooks aplenty lurking behind the scenes at the retailer. What's more, as you can see in the shot of an inventory screen after the break, it seems all but certain that the launch date is indeed April 18th, although there's still no confirmation of a price -- we wouldn't be counting on any discounts over Barnes & Noble itself, though.Continue reading Barnes & Noble Nook seen lying in wait at Best BuyBarnes & Noble Nook seen lying in wait at Best Buy originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 16:08:00 EST. http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/blackberry-9650-spotted-in-the-wild-again-bold-branding-confi/

The Tour branding never made a lot of sense -- RIM's most recently-released high-end portrait QWERTY device for CDMA networks occupies the same market position as the Bold over on GSM networks, so the name difference is kind of arbitrary and more than just a little bit confusing. It's all good, though, because CrackBerry has confirmation here that the Tour's replacement -- the 9650 -- is going to be wearing a Bold badge loud and proud around back by the 3.2 megapixel camera. It's not clear exactly when Sprint and Verizon are going to launch this sucker, but it's patently obvious that they both will -- it's just a matter of time -- so you may as well start prepping your eulogy for that infernal trackball now.BlackBerry 9650 spotted in the wild again, 'Bold' branding confirmed originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 15:49:00 EST. 18) RED Station makes modular storage look good
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/red-station-makes-modular-storage-look-good/

ARRI may have attracted the majority of attention from camera nerds at this year's NAB show with its ALEXA camera, but RED is making a respectable showing itself, and has now introduced its new RED Station modular storage unit. That consists of a typically RED-looking base station, along with either a CompactFlash card reader module or a 2.5-inch SSD / hard drive reader, or both. Each of those modules also naturally packs an ample supply of ports, including not one but two FireWire 800 ports, and a single eSATA and mini USB port. Of course, all that doesn't exactly come cheap, with each piece of the puzzle set to run about $250 when they roll out on April 16th. RED isn't quite done with NAB just yet, however, as it also plans to show off a working EPIC camera at the show.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/jobs-if-you-see-a-stylus-or-a-task-manager-they-blew-it/

Steve Jobs is never one to mince words when taking questions from the press, and he just made it very clear how he feels about other platforms during the iPhone OS 4 event when asked about task management:

Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?

A: (Scott Forstall) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it.

A: (Steve Jobs) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/steve-jobs-we-tried-to-buy-a-company-called-admob/

We'd previously heard rumors that Quattro Wireless was Apple's consolation prize after a deal with bigger mobile advertising rival AdMob fell through, and Steve Jobs confirmed it on no uncertain terms at the Q&A session following today's iPhone OS 4.0 event: "we tried to buy a company called AdMob... but Google snatched it away." Indeed they did, though that deal hasn't yet been approved by the Federal Trade Commission while Apple's already up, up and away with its iAd solution, so it seems like everything shook out for the best -- if you're an iPhone developer, anyway.Steve Jobs: 'we tried to buy a company called AdMob' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 14:41:00 EST. 22) Multitasking comes to iPhone OS 4.0 -- but not to the iPhone 3G
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/multitasking-comes-to-iphone-os-4-0/

You heard that right, people -- iPhone OS 4 just brought multitasking to the platform! Apple says they've figured out how to implement third party multitasking without hurting performance or battery life, and they're demoing it now -- you just double click the home button and see a list of your apps, and you can just tap to switch between apps. The system actually runs the services apps need in the background -- the apps don't need to do them individually, so it's not a "true" multitasking system, but it seems plenty effective. There are seven services: background audio, which allows you to use the standard pop-over iPod controls, Voice over IP, which can receive calls in the background, location services for GPS and social networking (there's an indicator if any service is tracking you), updated push notifications with local notifications, task completion so you can finish things like [...]

All that great stuff we just heard about iPhone OS 4: multitasking, tentpoles, app folders, Game Center, iAd -- okay, maybe you weren't all that excited about iAd -- seemed destined to hit the iPad this summer. Surely, right? Instead, rather than finishing with his usual "one more thing" flourish today, Steve Jobs just left a stunned audience with the terse statement that Apple will be "bringing OS 4 to the iPad this fall." That's like... a whole different season from the new operating system's release. 24) iPhone OS 4 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/iphone-os-4-0-unveiled-shipping-this-summer/

Just a bit more than a year after we first laid eyes on iPhone OS 3.0, Apple is back with the latest big revision of the OS that powers the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. iPhone OS 4 is shipping this summer (iPad in the fall), and the developer preview will be out today. iPhone 3GS and new-gen iPod touch will get all the features, but some features won't make it to the iPhone 3G, original iPhone, and older iPod touches. The biggest new feature is multitasking, which Apple says is going to be the "best" implementation in the smartphone space, though it's obviously not the first. App switching is activated by double tapping the home button, which pulls up a "dock" of currently running apps, and Apple claims it can do this without hurting battery life or performance for the front app. Unfortunately, this multitasking won't be available for devices older than the 3GS and new iPod touch. 25) Apple iAd brings ads, cash money to third-party iPhone apps
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/apple-iad-brings-ads-cash-money-to-third-party-iphone-apps/

If you were wondering exactly what Apple had in mind with its acquisition of Quattro Wireless a few months back, the picture gets a little clearer today with the announcement of the iAd mobile ad platform alongside iPhone OS 4.0 today with the company saying that iPhone devs have a billion "ad opportunities" per day. The idea is to keep users in the apps to see interactive, "emotional" ad content as often as once every three minutes -- not to "yank" them out, as Steve puts it -- while developers are rewarded with a 60 percent cut of the revenue. Ads are hosted and served by Apple, and while there'll be some sort of approval process, Steve's describing it as a "light touch," so it probably isn't the same process traditional apps go through. This makes things considerably more interesting for the mobile advertising business as a whole, since Google's been trying to seal the deal on an [...]

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/apples-sold-450-000-ipads-as-of-today-pushed-3-5-million-ipad/

There you have it -- according to Steve Jobs at today's iPhone event, nearly half a million iPads have been pushed so far alongside 3.5 million iPad app downloads -- a perfect few orders of magnitude above the 3,500 iPad apps presently available. It's not clear whether that includes units sold to third party retailers (like Best Buy) that are still sitting on store shelves, though, so there's quite a bit of potential for variability there. Separately, he's mentioned that 50 million iPhones have now been sold worldwide alongside 35 million iPod touches -- so yeah, needless to say, the iPad has some big shoes to fill if it wants to hit the same level of rousing success.Apple's sold 450,000 iPads as of today, pushed 3.5 million iPad app downloads (update: 50 million iPhones!) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 12:40:00 EST. 29) New Mitsubishi 3D DLPs arrive for 2010, is this the mysterious StreamTV?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/new-mitsubishi-3d-dlps-arrive-for-2010-is-this-the-mysterious-s/

Sure most other manufacturers are new to this 3DTV thing but Mitsubishi is already on its fourth generation, announcing the new 638, 738 and 838 series DLP TVs. New for the 2010 lineup, and possibly giving some insight to those weird HDTVs that appeared on Amazon yesterday is "StreamTV" interactive media which appears to be a new (post Wal-mart acquisition?) branding for the VUDU Apps service we spotted during CES with Pandora, Flickr, Picasa and others built in. If that sounds like a little too much then don't worry, it's not in the base 638 series televisions while the 738 models add StreamTV, an optional WiFi N adapter and video calibration options, and the top of the line 838 models offer Mitsubishi's 16 speaker built-in iSP surround sound tech along with a few other minor adjustments as upgrades. We're still waiting to find out when these ship (probably in the next month or so), [...]

30) Netflix looking to hire 'Android video playback expert'
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/netflix-looking-to-hire-android-video-playback-expert/

Netflix will stop at nothing, we say -- nothing -- until you have the ability to watch films like Failure to Launch and Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom on every conceivable device in your possession. It's hit the Wii, it's coming to the iPhone, and now? That's right, the kids at Los Gatos want YOU to help "build Instant Streaming client implementations on Android devices." Are you "a senior engineer with a strong background in embedded and mobile development, specifically on media-enabled devices," with over ten years experience, hands-on experience with media playback on the Android platform, and a knack for DRM technologies? You're in luck! Hit the source link to get started. And if you do get hired, make sure you keep us in the loop as things progress. You owe us at least that much, right?

31) Eclair shocker! Android 2.1 leaked for Samsung Moment
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/eclair-shocker-android-2-1-leaked-for-samsung-moment/

Feeling impatient? Can't wait until Moment gets its Android 2.1 upgrade? The kids at SDX-Developers feel you, with one forum member providing a simple, straightforward download link to a 7z archive containing not one but two leaked builds: ECLAIR.DC23 and ECLAIR.DD03. According to the hub-bub, the latter seems to be giving people the most luck, although some are reporting a "faulty" Marketplace. That said, both builds do seem to work with voice and data. And yes, it will wipe your phone completely -- but if you're looking to get into this sort of action you're probably a risk-taker and a heart-breaker anyways. Good luck, and if you brick your phone don't blame us.

32) What it takes to properly convert a 2D movie to 3D
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/what-it-takes-to-properly-convert-a-2d-movie-to-3d/

3DTVs are useless without content and while to some sports is the killer app for 3D, others prefer movies. When it comes to new movies, there's Avatar and then there's everything else -- most movies are converted to 3D instead of using 3D cameras. The company In-Three originally formed with the intent of converting classics like Star Wars to 3D -- yes Lucas says he wants to do all six -- but with all the money 3D movies are making in theaters today, In-Three is spending their time working with producers on new movies like Alice in Wonderland.

Anyone who saw both Alice and Clash of the Titans will tell you that all dimensionalization isn't created equal. While most didn't realize Alice wasn't actually shot in 3D, reviews of Clash were titled like "the first film to actually be made worse by being in 3D." While the dimensionalization of Alice took four to six months, Clash was done in [...]

33) Verizon's HTC Incredible gets a user's manual
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/verizons-htc-incredible-gets-a-users-manual/

You can't buy an Incredible from Verizon just yet, but we're getting awfully close -- and in the meantime, you've got some exciting new reading material to pore over. It looks like the full, unabridged, seemingly final version of the phone's user's manual has just leaked over on Android Forums, and while there aren't any blockbuster revelations in here as far as we can tell, it confirms what we've long suspected: this is basically a CDMA Desire with an 8 megapixel camera. You've got the full Sense UI experience atop Android 2.1, a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 1GHz Snapdragon, and an optical joystick -- a new trend out of HTC that looks destined to completely supplant the trackball, much as it has already done for RIM. Around back, we've got some confirmation that the Incredible is going to feature a positively bizarre contoured battery cover; it might not be your first choice, but [...]

34) Apple granted design patent on Cover Flow
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/apple-granted-design-patent-on-cover-flow/

It was patent-grantin' day at the USPTO on Tuesday, and while most of the patents handed out to Apple, HP, Microsoft and others were pretty boring, it looks like Apple patent number D613,300 is going to make some waves -- it's a design patent on Apple's Cover Flow UI element. That's a design patent, not a utility patent, so it covers the look of the system and not its functionality; think of it as covering the distinctive shape of a Coke bottle and not how it works and you'll get it. That means Apple now has the ability to sue anyone using a system that looks "substantially similar" to Cover Flow, so Symbian^3 and Songbird are probably in for some changes. We'll see what happens -- it's not like anyone's called the lawyers in. Yet.

P.S.- We were going to include the HP Slate here, but we went back and watched the video and ironically enough they're actually faking flick scrolling a [...]

35) Festo's flying AirPenguin robot induces daydreaming beyond the sea (video)
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/festos-flying-airpenguin-robot-induces-daydreaming-beyond-the-s/

Penguins. Such graceful creatures. Mommy never told us why these birds don't fly, but here's proof that this won't be a concern for our little 'uns. What you're looking at is the Festo AirPenguin's rare appearance outside its German labs -- the Gotengo-esque airship is at The Gadget Show Live in Birmingham, UK this week. Sure, this baby's a bit old, but being up close and personal with it is way more sensational than watching the mere 40-second-long segment from last time, and at least we now know it's the real deal. 36) SnapStream's monster DVR records 50 channels at once, even when nothin's on
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/snapstreams-monster-dvr-records-50-channels-at-once-even-when/

Get ready for an acute case of DVR inadequacy courtesy of SnapStream, which has pieced together what it's calling the world's largest DVR, and we're inclined to believe them. Run a coax in the back and, with a fully configured unit, you can record a whopping 50 channels simultaneously onto over 100TB of storage. The trick is it's actually five separate rack-mounted SnapStream DVRs that all join together to share storage, work across tuners, and to fight the evil King Zarkon from the planet Doom -- or at least to record all the Voltron reruns ever aired, ever. No word on the cost of a fully-configured rack, but given the size of that thing (check out the door in the background for comparison) we're thinking it might not fit in our entertainment center anyway.

37) Hiton HT-960 tablet rocks HP Slate's specs, $100 cheaper price
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/hiton-ht-960-tablet-rocks-hp-slates-specs-100-cheaper-price/

Right now HP's Slate is looking like it'll possess a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen, all for somewhere between $549 and $599. What we have here is another tablet offering almost identical netbook-like specs (though with only 16GB of SSD storage compared to HP's 32+) at a price of just $418. That's quite a savings if you can get over the rather chunkier styling -- and the unfortunate Windows XP install. You can even get 3G wireless for an extra $80 if you're so inclined, and according to the site it's available to ship right this very moment. But, after the recent issues with another no-name tablet, we'd think twice before dropping our credit card on this particular order form.

38) Segway RMP bots used for sniper target practice, other nefarious deeds (video)
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/segway-rmp-bots-used-for-sniper-target-practice-other-nefarious/

Are your snipers bored of the same old stationary, predictable cardboard targets? What they need is disconcertingly realistic acting robotic ones! The Australian Defense Force and Marathon Robotics took a number of two-wheeled RMP 200 Segway robots, placed hoodie-clad foam dummies on top, armored the bottoms, and then programmed them to wander randomly around a small village. A sniper perched up on a hill then picks off his target and, like magic, the remaining robots all scatter automatically in a game way more fun than Modern Warfare could ever hope to be. There's a video of that after the break, along with an RMP 400 doing some sweet jumps off-road, even roaring up stairs. The YouTube channel at the source link has plenty more Segway demos, some new and some old, so if you have some time to kill today you know where to click.
