1) 3,266 iPad apps and counting
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/3263-ipad-apps-and-counting/
Filed under: iPadAppShopper is listing 3,266 iPad apps available at the time of this writing. That's slightly more than 100 apps added since this morning. As of the morning of April 4th there were a total of 3,122 iPad apps available in the App Store according to Mobclix, a mobile ad exchange. At launch yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported 2300 iPad apps available in the App Store.
Of the 3,100+ apps Mobclix counted, 2,523 -- or roughly 80% of them -- were paid apps with the average price being $4.99. 942 of the iPad apps are games (804 paid, 138 free) and of the 154 book apps virtually all of them are paid. To put all the apps on your iPad would cost you a whopping $12,572.78.
TechCrunch contrasts the iPad app numbers with the iPhone apps. Of the 180,000 iPhone apps, 75% are paid. TechCrunch also theorizes that the prices of most iPad apps should go down as developers seek a [...]

2) Memo from PETi: stop torturing iPads!

Vice President, People for the Ethical Treatment of iPads (PETi)
To: YouTube user THISisCaSpEr
Dear Mr. THISisCaSpEr,
We received an anonymous tip from a friend of iPads about the horrendous treatment that you gave to a poor, defenseless iPad yesterday. He sent pictures and a video, so there's no way that you're going to weasel out of this one, buster!
These young iPads (or Pad Puppies as we call them) experience plenty of trauma being dragged away from their parents, forced into boxes with fruit stickers inside of them, and then sold into slavery to surf the web, check email, and play games for their brutal owners. The thought of all those people stroking their fingers over these young iPads just makes me sick. You, sir, take matters beyond that with your violent and unjustified attacks.
We're publicizing this brutal [...]

3) Reflections: A day and a night with the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/reflections-a-day-and-a-night-with-the-ipad/
Filed under: iPadGetting an iPad was an unplanned part of my day. My original idea was to wait for version 2, but I found myself at a local Best Buy taking pictures and interviewing people in line, and the manager came out and said there were some available. Bingo. Reality distortion field. Up went my hand.
I spent yesterday afternoon and last night getting a pretty good idea of what this baby does and doesn't do. Here are a few preliminary thoughts:
Setup is easy, but a bit slow. I plugged it into iTunes, selected what music, movies and apps I wanted to copy to the iPad and I was on my way. It seemed like the sync took forever, and subsequent syncs are VERY slow. Lots of spinning beach balls. Maybe it's my system. Maybe not.
The iPad alerted me that there were quite a few app updates that gave direct support to the higher resolution screen, so I was happy for that.
How is the iPad [...]

4) Piper Jaffray: Apple sold 600-700 thousand iPads the first day
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/piper-jaffray-apple-sold-600-700-thousand-ipads-the-first-day/
Filed under: iPadPiper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster issued a research note this morning that Apple likely sold 600-700 thousand iPads on Saturday. That's a far cry from the 200-300 thousand he originally predicted. His numbers included online pre-orders that started on March 12. It's unclear what information Munster is using for his analysis, but he does note one interesting statistic: the NYC Fifth Avenue Apple Store had 730 people in line for the iPad launch, compared to 350 for the iPhone 3GS and 540 for the iPhone 3G.
Let's assume if pre-orders hadn't been available, everyone that ordered one would have shown up on day one to buy an iPad. If Munster's high-end numbers are correct, 700,000 iPads in one day is a phenomenal launch considering it's a brand new device in a brand new category. The iPhone 3G and 3GS sold one million units in three days and the first iPhone sold one [...]

6) SDK devsugar: 3.2 leaves beta
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/sdk-devsugar-3-2-leaves-beta/
Filed under: Developer As of yesterday, with the release of the iPad hardware, the 3.2 iPhone OS SDK is no longer in beta. The SDK is now available to all members of the iPhone developer program, including the free online program. Normally, during beta, the SDK is limited to paid members only.
Since the SDK is now in general release, the NDA will have timed out as well. That means that you will be able to talk freely about the 3.2 SDK outside of Apple's developer forums. Although those forums remain an excellent resource for tracking down information from Apple engineers, they are highly moderated.
Since the 3.2 gold master release of the SDK is also known as "Beta 6", you can expect (with a fair degree of confidence) that a new beta should be showing up, behind the NDA and paid developer barricades, in short order. Hopefully, it will address any missing-in-action iPad features and [...]

7) New Hampshire man is victim of first recorded iPad theft
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/new-hampshire-man-is-victim-of-first-recorded-ipad-theft/
Filed under: iPadSomeone has to be first, I suppose. Straight from the police iBlotter in Manchester, NH, the Union Leader reports that a broad-daylight iPad theft was perpetrated in the parking lot of a Best Buy on South Willow Street.
Mohamed Aboutaleb of Dover had just bought his new iPad in the store (capacity and accessories not known) when he was the victim of a shove-and-grab theft. The teenage thief then fled with Aboutaleb's magical and revolutionary shopping bag via a getaway car driven by another teenager.
While progress is being made on the iPad jailbreak (via Dev Team member MuscleNerd), these real-world lawbreakers are still unidentified and on the loose. Anyone with information about the iMugging is encouraged to contact the Manchester police department.
As a public safety reminder, whenever you are carrying easily-identifiable high value packages around (such as an [...]

8) iPad 101: User Guides and other helpful resources
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/ipad-101-user-guide/
Filed under: iPadYou've bought your iPad. Congratulations! So are you ready to learn all the ways you can get the most from your new purchase? Here's a quick run-down of some indispensable resources as you're getting up to speed with your new purchase.
Read the manuals: The iPad User Guide (pdf) provides an in-depth review. This user manual is not included in the iPad packaging. Instead, Apple hosts it on its support site. This 154-page long (!) guide covers all the basics for using the iPad and understanding how it works. If you'd like to convert this PDF-formatted guide into a format (called "ePub") that you can use to read on your iPad, there's a handy website called epub2go that will handle the conversion for you. After transforming the file to epub, just drop it onto your iTunes library and sync it to your iPad. You'll be able to read the book using Apple's free iBooks [...]

9) Poll: Why did you buy the iPad?

It's been a wild weekend with people lining up across the country to get the iPad. So many of you waited in line, forked out your cash, and went home and unboxed it. But, why did you buy it? Steve Jobs admits that the iPad is in a new device category all its own, and people are going to come to it for different reasons.
Personally, I'm getting my iPad solely for leisurely web browsing around the house and for reading magazines on (you can pry my printed books from my cold dead hands). But the iPad is so much more than just a reader, it seems there's a feature for every type of user. We at TUAW want to know what primary feature drove you to spend your cheddar on the iPad. Vote now!

10) Top Terminal easter eggs
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/top-terminal-easter-eggs/
Filed under: UNIX / BSDYeah, the headline makes it sound like the eggs are on their deathbed. But no, easter eggs (in software jargon) are little presents or surprises that developers have slipped into an application or operating system. One excellent place to find easter eggs in Mac OS X is in the Terminal.
Now technically, these easter eggs aren't part of Mac OS X. The Terminal app is a portal into the UNIX underpinnings of Mac OS X. You can find the Terminal app in the Applications > Utilities folder. Here are four of my favorites:
1. Important dates in history -- Lord of the Rings style
At the Terminal prompt paste the following: cat /usr/share/calendar/calendar.history and press return. You'll get a list of famous dates throughout the centuries -- including some that take place in Middle Earth.
2. Snake Game
At the Terminal prompt type in emacs, then press enter. You'll see a [...]

11) Steve pays a visit to Palo Alto store
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/04/steve-pays-a-visit-to-palo-alto-store/
Filed under: iPad
Imagine that you're an Apple Store employee -- at the University Avenue store in Palo Alto, for instance -- and that iPad Saturday is one of the busiest, highest-pressure work experiences you've ever had. It's been hectic, customers are streaming through the store, there's media and onlookers everywhere. Of course you're demoing and selling a product that you hadn't ever touched until minutes before the store opened. You're cool as a cucumber, though; you've got things going right on track, dialed in and solid.
Now imagine that Steve Jobs just shows up to casually check out how things are going. So much for your equilibrium, right?
I dearly wish we had some spy video or behind-the-scenes profane exclamations, but all we've got is the Mercury News story. Steve, plus his wife and daughter, dropped by the store around noon Pacific time to observe the festivities and [...]
