Cultured Code has released the iPad version of their classic iPhone task list app, Things. The new Things for iPad (US$19.99), as you can see in the video above, is absolutely gorgeous on the new Apple platform, and benefits greatly from the larger layout. I've personally downloaded the iPad version, synced my tasks, and the app seems like it's a natural part of the iPad.

We'll be publishing a full review of Things for iPad soon. In the meanwhile, feast your eyes on this 34 second video showing everything you'll be doing to keep yourself up to date on your work and personal tasks.TUAWiPad launch first look: Things for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. 4) Popular Science magazine comes to the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/popular-science-magazine-comes-to-the-ipad/

Mag+ live with Popular Science+ from Bonnier on Vimeo.

The Mag+ digital magazine concept was first previewed in December, six weeks before Apple announced the iPad. Looks like their awesome concept just needed the right tech. Now Bonnier has released Popular Science+, the iPad edition of Popular Science magazine. Not content with just porting an issue's pages over to the iPad, Bonnier collaborated with BERG, a London-based design studio, and created Popular Science+ based on six design principles that rule their Mag+ philosophy.

Their rules do a terrific job at explaining the difference between a magazine and a web page and what readers expect from a magazine that they don't expect from the web (magazines have a defined beginning and end, they have fewer distractions than the web, and are delivered on an issue-basis). The video above does a good job in showing how [...]

5) iPad teardown posted at iFixit
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-teardown-posted-at-ifixit/

Filed under: iPadAs they always do with any bit of new Apple tech, iFixit has posted a full teardown of the iPad on their site. Some things of note from their teardown:

-- iFixit broke some of the plastic tabs when pulling the display assembly away from the back case, so if you're looking into DIY repair of the iPad, keep that in mind.

-- The display assembly and rear case both weigh 350 grams each, meaning weight distribution front-to-back is exactly 50/50.

-- There is a large void in the upper right corner of the WiFi-only iPad. This is where the 3G chipset will live in the 3G-enabled iPads.

-- The battery (actually two batteries hooked in parallel) takes up most of the iPad's internal volume. It's a 3.75 Volt, 24.8 Watt-hour battery; by comparison, the iPhone 3GS has a 4.51 Watt-hour battery, while the MacBook Air's battery is 40 Watt-hours. The battery weighs 148 grams -- 13 [...]

6) The next iPad, iPod touch, and two new iPhones hinted at in iPad OS
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/the-next-ipad-ipod-touch-and-two-new-iphones-hinted-at-in-ipad/

Filed under: iPadIt hasn't even been out for a day, but there are already hints of the next iPad in the current iPad's OS. BoyGeniusReport did some digging around in the iPad OS file system and found some interesting seeds burried pretty deep. They found references to "iPhone3,2," "iPhone3,3," "iPod4,1," and "iProd2,1."

iProd 1,1 was the original reference to the current iPad. The current model of the iPhone is 3,1, while the current iPod Touch is 3,1, and the current iPad is 1,1. What the new references reveal is that not only is Apple working on the next iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (no shock there), but that there will be two versions of the next iPhone.

Products with different storage capacities do not get differing referal numbers, so its anyone guess how the next iPhones may differ. One possibility could be that the differing iPhones may be an AT&T-specific iPhone while the [...]

7) The story behind the iPad's home screen photo
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/the-story-behind-the-ipads-home-screen-photo/

Filed under: iPadWhen Steve Jobs revealed the iPad back in January, viewers stared in breathless amazement, none more so than Richard Misrach, the artist whose photo is the default home screen image.

He was sitting at home watching a movie when his phone rang. It was his agent, and he couldn't believe what was happening. Soon, Richard's family and friends were all calling. Needless to say, Apple's decision to use his photo for this "magical revolutionary device" was a surprise.

Misrach had submitted 10 photos for Apple to consider for "wallpaper" some time ago, but they had all been rejected, he told Art Info. There was no mention of the iPad at the time, but they eventually called back to say yes, they'd like to use his "Pyramid Lake (at Night)" photo.

He describes the image as "...a long night exposure where the moon is lighting up the mountains in the distance. I shot it on an [...]

8) iPad launch: the view from Southern Arizona
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-the-view-from-southern-arizona/

Filed under: iPadHere in Arizona one thing you see is a lot of trucks in the Apple Store parking areas. A few gun racks too. Not really the ambiance of Silicon Valley or Chicago or New York.

tweetmeme_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-day-1-the-view-from-southern-arizona/" tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"
There was a lot of enthusiasm about the iPad, especially at our one local Apple Store at the La Encantada Mall. My first stop was at the Best Buy in Oro Valley. I drove by just before 8 A.M. and 7 people were outside. They explained to me that the Best Buy had 15 to sell, and the manager would be out with claim checks. Hmmm. Only 7 people. I wasn't planning on getting an iPad just yet. No camera, no printing. What the hell. It was easy to raise my hand. They gave my my claim check, and said they would call later today when UPS arrives with the iPads.

Then it was off to the Apple [...]

9) iPad launch: Boston's Boylston Street store
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-bostons-boylston-street-store/

The crystal-clear facade of Boston's Boylston Street Apple Store* beckoned and a slew of customers heeded the call this morning to greet the iPad. By the time I arrived at 8am, a line had formed down the street and around the corner -- a few hundred people at least. A second line for pre-order customers formed later in the morning, and by 9am was just as long as the first line. The store's interior was hidden by a black curtain that ran the length of the building.

The mood was jovial, with everyone discussing their plans for the new device. Apple Store employees were moving up and down the line, making chit-chat and offering candy, water and coffee. The weather was fine (unlike the rainy iPhone launch), if not a little cold.

11) Square payment system launches on iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/square-launches-on-ipad/

Filed under: iPadThe wait is over. The app that blew us away at Macworld Expo, Square, has finally launched...on the iPad.

Originally developed and advertised as an iPhone app, Square hit shelves this morning as a fully-optimized iPad app. Now customers can install Square on their iPads, effectively turning them into flat black cash registers.

While we loved the preview of Square on the iPhone, it's another ball of wax on the iPad. The extra room and gorgeous UI make it look more professional, plus there's plenty of room for signatures, images and more. The "receipt" itself is much more legible. I can easily see this sitting on a dock or being carried around by a merchant.

The free app includes a dongle that plugs into the iPad's headphone jack, which means you can still use the app while the iPad is docked.

This speaks directly to what I said about the iPad yesterday: Its "killer [...]

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/mens-health-magazine-comes-to-the-ipad/

Men's Health, the world's largest men's magazine with editions in 40 countries across the globe, has released the Men's Health iPad Edition. With each issue you get everything you'd get in the pages of the regular magazine, but the iPad edition gives you extra benefits including an "Enhanced View" interface that overlays icons on any given page to highlight a page's multimedia features including video of exercises, real-time Snap Polls, bookmarking, and Twitter and Facebook integration.

In addition to a Table of Contents pop-up, there's also a Scrub pane feature that allows readers to quickly flip through the entire issue via a film-strip view. Interestingly enough, Men's Health say they will start making enhanced back issues available on the iPad.

13) Consumer Reports discovers iPad charging issues
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/consumer-reports-discovers-ipad-charging-issues/

Filed under: iPadConsumer Reports has discovered that thus far, iPads can not be recharged using the USB ports on any non-Apple computer.

The places where the iPad did charge, in their tests, included an iMac and a MacBook Pro. The iPad would not charge using any USB ports on several Windows machines, nor through the USB port on an Apple wired keyboard connected to the iMac.

They're not the only ones to notice it. Our own Steve Sande just noticed that his iPad, which is linked to a USB hub connected to his iMac, is not charging through the hub. Apple's tech note for iPad charging covers some of these contingencies.

Apple Tech Support told Consumer Reports that the iPad was designed to be powered using the wall charger. Dave Caolo also was informed by Apple retail staff that using the iPad charger to charge your iPhone is not recommended.

If you don't have a Mac, for now you're [...]

14) iPad launch: Buying at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station, NY
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-buying-at-the-walt-whitman-mall-in-huntington-stati/

I got to the Apple Store at Walt Whitman Mall at about 8:30 AM and the mall doors were open. There were already about 150 people waiting for their iPad, and the Apple Store folks had two lines set up: one for advance reservations and one for walk-ins.

As a pre-order customer, I gave my name to a blue-shirted Apple person and was told to wait on the reservation line. For each 10 people with a reservation they would let in one person without, so perhaps they had something of a handle on inventory. There was coffee and water to be had while waiting and a quick look inside the store showed so many Apple workers that I couldn't imagine how any customers would fit. At ten minutes to opening, a huge crowd of blue shirts ran up and down the mall screaming at the top of their lungs to pump up the crowd, but we didn't need pumping up. Everyone was really psyched already.

15) iPad launch: Santa Monica Apple Store
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-santa-monica-apple-store/

It was actually a low-key affair at the Santa Monica Apple Store on the Third Street Promenade this morning. About an hour before the store opened for business at 9am PST, there were only about 100 people in line, and by the time all of the Apple employees moved outside, clapping and trying to get the sedate crowd to show a little excitement about emptying their wallets for the Church of Jobs, there were probably at most 500 people. But the gathered took the launch in stride -- the mood was cordial, the media were few, and most everybody just walked in, grabbed their iPad, and headed out without fanfare.

You can see pictures of the goings-on in the gallery below. This store is usually frequented by at least a few celebrities, but we didn't recognize anybody specific, so see if you can catch one we missed in the pictures. All in all, it was about as smooth a launch as [...]

16) iPad launch day, Broadway/UWS store
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-day-broadway-nyc-store/

Filed under: iPadThe sun-dappled temple of Apple just north of Lincoln Center was quite a bit more laid-back than the 5th Ave. store, at least by the time I arrived in the late morning. Reservations were being handled downstairs (no line to speak of) and walk-in sales up on the show floor. Stock of all three models was "fine," according to overheard chatter between salesfolk and would-be buyers. (They also seem to be pushing the MobileMe, for what it's worth.)

I did swing by the Best Buy that's conveniently located between the two uptown NYC Apple Stores, and indeed they also had iPads in stock. No line there either, but a nice little crowd chatting with the Apple Specialist. Note to whoever put the laserprinted sign on the front door: it's "iPads," not "Ipads."

17) iPad launch: Boston's first in line
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/ipad-launch-bostons-first-in-line/

Filed under: iPadWe're were on the ground in Boston this morning (and New York, and Colorado, and ... ) waiting for the Apple Store to open. Here at the Boylston Street store the line started very early. At 12:00 am, in fact.

Meet Miles. He's a New Yorker currently attending school in nearby Beverly, MA and was Boston's 1st customer. He arrived at just after midnight to grab the coveted spot. He told me that others began arriving after 12:30 and the stream was steady after then.

The mood in the line was optimistic and people are chatty, as typically happens at Apple line-ups. Miles told me that he had a conversation with one customer about the benefits of the Blackberry, but it didn't last long.

Apple employees are occasionally peering down from behind the store's glass facade and shouting "Miles!" and waving.

This isn't the first time he's waited in line. A few years ago he lined [...]

19) Check-in from an Apple Store on Gowalla, get entered to win an Ollie
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/check-in-from-an-apple-store-on-gowalla-get-entered-to-win-an-o/

Filed under: Odds and endsIconfactory have a long history of lovely Mac things, including the spectacular Twitterrific iPhone app. When they created Twitterrific, they gave it an adorable icon of a little blue birdie. His name is Ollie. His popularity is always increasing. Of course, he is super cute, which helps. So super cute in fact, that the fellows at the Iconfactory have created a vinyl figure of Ollie.

Gowalla is a location-based service; you use it to check in at places and you can collect badges and see if your friends are in the same place too. Sometimes they do promotions where you can pick up a physical version of an item, not just a badge, when you check in someplace.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

From now until April 6th, when you check in at an Apple Store on Gowalla, you will be able to pick up a digital Ollie as part of your Gowalla booty. As an added bonus, [...]

TUAW Editor Steve Sande is live at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado, and will be streaming the action to you via Ustream at around 11 AM EDT (8 AM PDT).

Some things we know now re. the retail situation:

Yes, there was an all-hands call this morning, at least here at 5th Ave.
No, there wasn't a ban on employees bringing their iPhones with them, as far as we can tell.
Yes, the retail staff didn't get to touch iPads until this morning, so for the first couple of hours they will be catching up.
Yes, they are carrying small blue chamois cloths to polish fingerprints off of the display units. Frequently.

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/03/gmail-html5-optimized-for-the-ipad/

Filed under: iPadGoogle announced yesterday that they've optimized the Gmail web app for the iPad. The new user interface for the iPad is built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web application and brings Gmail a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and your messages to the right.

While the two-pane view is nothing groundbreaking, it is a welcome improvement -- and something MobileMe has had on the desktop since it launched. One can only hope they bring this two-pane functionality to the standard desktop-based Gmail web app.

Filed under: Retro MacI apologize. This post would have gone up sooner but I was busy buying one of these!

I have two stickers on my car, and they aren't really even stickers, they're static clings: TiVo, and an old style rainbow Apple logo. Yeah, I have stacks of those pretty white ones, but they aren't the same as the adorable old one. You know, the logo in the corner of all those "Think Different" posters.

I miss that logo. I understand the evolution toward the clean, modern (boring), white one, and it is lovely, but I miss the logo of the company I started with, the one that put apple-flavored adhesive on the seal of the registration card (you had to mail registrations back in the day kids, there was no internet). That was the company that put their logo (bless their hearts) upside down on their laptops for awhile.
