1) TUAW Review: Real Racing HD rocks the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/tuaw-review-real-racing-hd-rocks-the-ipad/

Filed under: GamingUpdate: Want to see a spiffy video of Real Racing HD? Here you go.

I fell in love with racing games thanks to Ridge Racer for the original Sony Playstation. I played the whole franchise, beat every track and learned the intricacies of every car. Even today I'll pull out the Playstation Portable for a run around Ridge City. Could another racer grab me the way RR had?

Thanks to Firemint, the answer is yes. Real Racing HD (RRHD) looks great, sounds great, features well-conceived depth of play, effective use of the accelerometer, customization and more. In fact, it's one of the apps I use to show off the iPad.

When the game is first launched, you're presented with a cinematic* and then the welcome screen. Before you go tapping around, take a moment to enjoy it. The camera gently sways back and forth. Your current car can be seen in a bay (more on that later). Light [...]

2) Apple gobbles up chip maker Intrinsity for $121 million
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/apple-gobbles-up-chip-maker-intrinsity-for-121-milion/

Apple's buying spree for chip technology companies continues, with The New York Times reporting that the company has acquired Intrinsity. The Texas-based fabless semiconductor company was widely thought to be the engineering brains behind the iPad's A4 system-on-a-chip. Intrinsity's 1 GHz hummingbird processor was developed in partnership with Samsung last year, and the A4 is believed to be based on that technology.

The terms of the agreement have not yet been made public, but analysts have reported a price tag of US$121 million. Apple-watchers expected this deal to be closed this month after many Intrinsity employees changed their pages on LinkedIn to show their new job titles at Apple.

Intrinsity's acquisition by Apple continues the trend of the Cupertino-based electronics manufacturer bringing more chip expertise in-house, with the 2008 purchase of P.A. Semi [...]

3) Some retailers in Japan stopping online sale of Apple products
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/some-retailers-in-japan-stopping-online-sale-of-apple-products/

Filed under: Apple CorporateThe Nikkei Business Daily is reporting that several large discount chains have stopped selling Apple products online. Some of the retailers have been quoted as saying the request comes from Apple.

The dropped products include iPods and iMacs.

Yodobashi Camera Company posted a notice online saying it wasn't going to be selling any more Apple products out of respect for Apple's wishes. It said it would be glad to sell Apple products in any of its retail stores.

Several other Japanese discounters have said they won't be selling Apple products online, but are available to customers who come into the retail outlets.

Apple has had no comment on the report. Some online companies like Amazon Japan are still selling products from Apple.

It's likely Apple doesn't want to see its products discounted online, which could lead to a price war. There are, however, [...]

4) Eye-Fi announces Apple-exclusive Geo X2
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/eye-fi-announces-apple-exclusive-geo-x2/

Filed under: HardwareOn Tuesday, Eye-Fi announced a new Apple-exclusive product as well as expansion of its hotspot service plan.

Their new device, the Eye-Fi Geo X2, will only be sold at Apple Stores starting in May. It brings faster uploads of photos and video (via a new 802.11n transmitter) directly to iPhoto and MobileMe (Picasa, Facebook, and 20+ others). Its capacity is 4GB.

One cool new feature is what they're calling Endless Memory, which allows users to have Eye-Fi automatically make space available on the card after photos and videos have been safely uploaded. Neat! It also does automatic geotagging so your shots will show up in iPhoto's "Places" feature with no problem.

Eye-Fi also announced the expansion of its hotspot service plan through a partnership with Devicescape, allowing X2 users to upload photos internationally and on thousands more networks.

If the US$49.99 [...]

5) Software Update alert: iTunes 9.1.1 released
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/software-update-alert-itunes-9-1-1-released/

Good news, everyone!

iTunes 9.1.1 just poked its head up in Software Update and said "download me."

According to the update notes, iTunes 9.1.1 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

o. Addressing several stability issues with VoiceOver;

o. Addressing a usability issue with VoiceOver and Genius Mixes;

o. Addressing issues with converting songs to 128 kbps AAC while syncing; and

o. Addressing other issues that improve stability and performance. (Probably the biggest and most important reason for the update, in our humble opinion.)

6) A hands-on look at iStat Menus 3
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/a-hands-on-look-at-istat-menus-3/

During the summer of 2008, I was using my MacBook Air outside on a very hot (102°F in the shade) day when I noticed that the laptop seemed to have slowed down to the point that it was almost unusable. Fortunately, I had installed iSlayer's iStat, and I was able to tell at a glance that one of the cores of the Core 2 Duo processor had shut down.

Sure enough, a quick look around the Web pointed out that other MacBook Air owners were running into similar problems in "warm" conditions. Cooling off the MBA resolved the issue (and made me a lot cooler, too!), and I've never had the problem since. That one occurrence taught me the value of a tool like iStat, so the application has been on my Macs ever since.

Now comes iStat Menus 3, the latest version of the venerable Mac monitoring application. The company name has changed -- it's now Bjango -- but the product still [...]

7) Found Footage: iPad output to TV with iPhone control
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/found-footage-ipad-output-to-tv-with-iphone-control/

Dave at Magic Jungle Software wanted to turn the iPad into a video game console. So he got on his thinking cap and did a little bit of development to turn his idea into a reality. The video you see here shows an iPad running a demo of his game, Chopper 2 (currently in development), while connected to a 42" TV via Apple's component cable.

Even better, David notes that he used all public APIs to accomplish this feat. As of the 3.2 SDK, Apple now offers App Store-safe ways to send video out through a VGA connector or through a component video or composite video adapter cable. You can get an idea of some of the details behind this technology in the slides from this 10-minute impromptu talk given by Erica Sadun over the weekend at the Voices that Matter conference.

But wait! There's more! The super fun part is that he's controlling the game with is iPhone via Bluetooth. [...]

8) Transmit 4 offers new features, faster performance
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/transmit-4-offers-new-features-faster-performance/

Transmit is the FTP client by Panic that has won legions of fans (myself included). After 5 years of version 3.x, Panic has finally released version 4.0 with a new UI, faster performance, and a slew of hot new features.

Transmit 4 is a near-total re-write of the application. The most notable change is the UI. Gone is all the white and Aqua-style drop-downs. This version offers a nice path bar and custom icons for your favorites (use theirs or supply your own). There's a new sync button and for the first time, Coverflow and thumbnail view. Finder classics like disclose folders and color-coding are now in place, and the beefed up progress bar tracks both overall progress and individual files. Nice!

I've only used the demo briefly this morning (we'll have a full review up at a later date), but it's noticeably faster than its predecessor. Panic claims a 25% speed [...]

9) Hands-on with PressOK Entertainment: Finger Physics, Fantasy Date, Spin it
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/hands-on-with-pressok-entertainment-finger-physics-fantasy-dat/

While in Seattle this past weekend, I got a chance to sit down with developer Alex Koloskov of PressOK Entertainment. As a company, they've been through a few mergers, but Koloskov and his team have been working on mobile apps for years, and iPhone apps since the early days of the App Store. Their biggest game is the very popular Finger Physics, but they've also recently released a huge update to their version of Gin Rummy. Koloskov also showed me a few other unreleased titles, including a game that will likely turn some heads and a very early version of the Finger Physics sequel.

Read on for early hands-on impressions of the titles that I saw and a little behind-the-scenes information about the company.

10) TUAW's Daily App: Above
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/tuaws-daily-app-above/

Our tipsters have been raving about Above, which is sort of a cross between Doodle Jump and Canabalt. It appeared in the App Store a little while ago. Odds are, after that description, you probably went looking for it already. Just in case you're still here, though, I'll tell you that it does offer up a few new tricks. Just like Canabalt, it's still a one-button-to-jump affair, but in Above, you actually hold down a finger to "charge" a jump, which adds a little more strategy to it. As in Doodle Jump, you're trying to constantly climb up a series of platforms using "powerfuls" (a feature of the game) and avoiding obstacles, but Above's unique art style and much more forgiving structure make for a different experience.

It's a very stylistic experience, from the great backgrounds and graphics to the trippy music. I'm not sure that it really offers anything new to this [...]

12) Get your Mac and PC Cubee cutouts here
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/get-your-mac-and-pc-cubee-cutouts-here/

Got some time to kill at the office today? Steal some heavy weight paper from the supply closet and print out your very own Cubee cutouts of Mac and PC.

The cutouts are designed by Jay Hauf, and they work best when you download the 1482 x 1173 versions and print them on heavy stock letter paper. For video instructions on how to assemble your Cubees, see here.

If you get bored recreating all 66 Get a Mac ads, you can mix it up a little by downloading the Steve Jobs Cubee cutout (which, IMO, looks a lot like a square version of Stewie Griffin when assembled). Now, get back to work!

13) Voices that Matter iPhone: Creating the Winter Olympics app
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/voices-that-matter-iphone-creating-the-winter-olympics-app/

Xomo's Jeff Sinclair took the stage on day two of this past weekend's Voices that Matter iPhone conference to the tune of the Olympic theme music -- his company (well his most recent company -- he's worked on a few other ventures previously) was formed for one purpose: to provide the official iPhone app for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Eleven months before the games, in March of 2009, Xomo was formed around the idea of "disposable apps" -- the thinking was that since most people only use an app for a period of weeks anyway, they would create event-based and location-based apps that had a built-in time limit. The eventual goal was to provide an Olympic app, and so even before the games knew they would want an app, Xomo started up to build one.

The story was actually pretty interesting -- Sinclair talks about the trials and tribulations of building both [...]

14) Voices that Matter iPhone: "From iPhone to iPad" panel
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/voices-that-matter-iphone-from-iphone-to-ipad-panel/

To end the first day of the Voices that Matter iPhone conference in Seattle last weekend, a group of veteran iPhone developers sat down for a roundtable panel and talked about the iPad. August Trometer (Yowza!!), Brent Simmons (NetNewsWire), Kyle Kinkade (Tap Tap Revenge), Daniel Pasco of Black Pixel, Tim Wood of The Omni Group, and TUAW's own Erica Sadun were questioned by moderator Chuck Toporek about the differences between the iPhone and the iPad and a few of the pressing issues that both devices are likely to face in the future.

Even though the panel ended the day (and all of the attendees and panelists were craving the eventual beer and pizza that would be available later in the evening), it was a lively discussion that offered both insight and frank opinions from these developers. Read on to hear what they said about Flash on the iPhone, app pricing, and their [...]

15) Company to begin testing restaurant iPad POS system
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/company-to-begin-testing-resturant-ipad-pos-system/

Lecere Corporation will begin testing their iPad-based, Fully-Integrated Restaurant Management Software in a "major restaurant chain" this week. The iPad FIRMS POS system, which can also be used with the iPod touch, offers a 90% savings on traditional POS systems and can be optimized to fit restaurants of any level -- form the individual restaurant to multinational chain restaurants, to hotels.

"Using those devices [iPad, iPod touch], along with a couple of standard ticket printers, brings the startup cost for the pilot to under $2,000," Lecere CEO Jim Morris said. "Contrast that with an upfront cost of about $20,000 to install a traditional, on-premises POS system with its heavy, non-movable POS terminals, printers, and back-office servers."

Ignoring the fact that the above video has the production values of a bad porno, the POS system on an iPad could easily take [...]

16) Beta Beat: Dejumble 2
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/beta-beat-dejumble-2/

Filed under: Beta BeatApps like Things and OmniFocus are (still) the big contenders for your task-management dollars, but there are plenty of fresh ideas popping up from "smaller" developers. For example, ThinkingCode just released an exciting public beta: version 2 of Dejumble, their entry into the task manager market. We've been watching Dejumble since its early days, and it's always been a fairly unique player ... though not necessarily cut out for heavy-duty task management. Version 2 is taking a crack at changing that.
A streamlined interface is the base for a faster task entry system and great new search features. The tagging system is easily navigated with mouse clicks, and it works with smart folders (as you'd probably expect). In addition to projects and tags, tasks can have subtasks, so advanced organization is possible. It's looking impressive, for an early beta. While it's [...]

17) Steve Jobs: "Life is fragile."
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/steve-jobs-life-is-fragile/

Filed under: Steve JobsBusiness Insider has published an email reply one of their readers received from Steve Jobs. The reader wrote to jobs after reading a speech Jobs gave about his experience with liver disease. The BI reader, who lost his young girlfriend to melanoma-induced liver failure, wrote to express gratitude that he took the time to address the issue of creating a live donor registry for kidney transplants in California.

Only a few hours later Steve wrote back:

"Your [sic] most welcome, James. I'm sorry about your girlfriend. Life is fragile.

Steve"
Despite the grammatical error in Steve's email, Business Insider believes the email (sent from his iPad) is authentic after double-checking the header information. Steve's emails are always about tech issues. It's nice to see him addressing the more important issues in life too. For another inspiring tear-jerker, Steve's 2005 [...]

18) iPad finger ripper suspect behind bars
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/ipad-finger-ripper-suspect-behind-bars/

It was a gruesome and sad story. After Bill Jordan picked up an iPad for a friend from the Cherry Creek Shopping Center Apple Store in Colorado, he was assaulted by two men who stole the iPad -- and in the process damaged his pinky finger so badly that part of it had to be removed.

Now, the Denver Post is reporting that police have one of the suspects behind bars. Brandon Darnell Smith was arrested without incident and is being held in connection with the investigation into the assault and robbery of Jordan. The arrest came one day after Smith was identified in the theft, and the police asked the public for help in finding him.

This particularly violent iPad theft has made national news and even ended up on one of David Letterman's Top Ten lists.TUAWiPad finger ripper suspect behind bars originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 27 Apr 2010 [...]

19) MoviePeg: An awesome chunk of rubber
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/27/moviepeg-an-awesome-chunk-of-rubber/

Filed under: AccessoriesOK, so it's actually a chunk of thermoplastic elastomer. That made for a poor title, though.

The MoviePeg is an inexpensive, ridiculously useful iPhone stand from magneticNorth. It's been my companion for a week, and frankly, I couldn't love it more.

Design

The MoviePeg is a small rectangle with a notch cut into it that perfectly accommodates the shell of an iPhone 3G or 3Gs.* One side of the notch is flat, while the other side curves to fit the iPhone's curved back. It weighs next to nothing and fits in my bag's smallest pocket.

They're available in six colors with clever names like Yellow Submarine and Soylent Green. I played it safe with Black Rain.

Gallery: Movie Peg stand for iPhone 3G and 3GS

*It can hold a 1st generation iPhone, but "...doesn't look great," according to magneticNorth. Additionally, it'll hold an iPod touch in the horizontal position [...]
