1) The four groups who will make the iPad huge
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/the-four-groups-who-will-make-the-ipad-huge/
Filed under: iPad
I've yet to use an iPad, but I've been thinking about how it will be received. In my mind, there are four groups that will make the iPad a huge hit: Mobile professionals, typical computer users, students and developers.
Mobile professionals
The first two groups -- mobile professionals and typical users -- will use the iPad as a laptop replacement. I think about the work that I do. Honestly, I only need my laptop when I'm writing posts. For the past few years, I've been successfully using my iPhone as a laptop replacement. Forget that it's even a phone for a minute. I'm able to communicate with my co-workers easily and rapidly via email, Twitter, text and instant message. Basically, everything I must do for work (save posting) can be accomplished with the iPhone.
The iPad will fill that role even more successfully as blogging becomes possible. Plus it's got [...]

Filed under: iPhoneOK, it's not all that surprising that the streaming movie & DVD shipper would plan an iPhone app to go along with the now-only-hours-away iPad version... but tonight's blog post on the Official Netflix Blog is downright cheeky.
To quote Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications: "For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod touch: We wouldn't invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we're working on it so stay tuned."
There you go.

3) Why I will buy an iPad, and think you should too
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/why-i-will-buy-an-ipad-and-think-you-should-too/
Filed under: iPadCory Doctorow doesn't like the iPad because it is laden with DRM. In other news today: water is still wet.
Joel Johnson and John Gruber already took apart one aspect of Cory's argument, the kid tinkering/creating with his new computer.
I'm going to focus on another part of it: my mom.
Last year my mom called me and wanted to buy a new laptop. Her old e-Machine, which I had routinely patched, updated, and kept going as long as I could, would no longer work.
She saw a US$400 laptop in the Sunday paper and asked me what I thought about it. I told her that she would be much better off spending more and getting a refurbished MacBook. She bought the $400 laptop anyway.
When I asked her why, she said that someone at work told her she couldn't take home files from work if she had a Mac. When I asked her what kind of files, she said "Oh, mostly Word and Excel." She was [...]

4) Low-tech testing on a high-tech iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/low-tech-testing-on-a-high-tech-ipad/
Filed under: iPad
Here's a little levity on the eve of the iPad launch chaos tomorrow. We're going through release after release today of all of these iPad apps, and after browsing page after page after page in the App Store, it's sometimes easy to forget just how much work went into each one of these things. The Omni Group has a nice writeup on their blog about how they designed the OmniGraphSketcher app, and while the iPad will be the center of attention tomorrow for its blend of technology and innovation, the Omni app was actually designed in a very low-tech way: with paper.
They designed a same-size iPad mockup and cut out a bunch of paper menus and interfaces, and then did their testing with them that way, going with instinct on what goes where and how it all worked out. The iPad is an innovative device, to be sure, but the reason it's so innovative is because you can model it [...]

5) Apple thinking about game controller, headset
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/apple-thinking-about-game-controller-headset/
Filed under: Apple
We've mentioned the idea of an external game controller on the iPhone (and now, the iPad) before, but this is the first we've heard of Apple working on one themselves. Apparently a new patent would cover applying buttons, joysticks, or direction pads to an external controller, something that would either plug in to the dock port or be included in a shell-like object that the device could slide into. This is very similar to the unofficial iControlPad that we've seen, but it would be designed by Apple. Apple is also working on some sort of head-mounted display system, and it's possible that these two things could be used in conjunction -- the buttons would provide tactile feedback, while the headset would bring in immersive audio and video.
This is all far in the future, and just because Apple nails down a patent on something doesn't mean it will ever be released to [...]

6) Flight Control HD live on the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/flight-control-hd-live-on-the-ipad/
Filed under: iPad
If there's a breakout game for the iPad already, it's probably Flight Control HD -- the game was announced a while ago (we talked about it with Firemint back at GDC), but the title has stayed in the top 10 pretty consistently since the iPad's App Store went live yesterday. Firemint has finally dropped the embargo on the title this morning, and you can see the game above -- it's basically the same game as the iPhone version, except bigger, clearer, and with a little more space for the plane-landing chaos. That allows for a few new gameplay variations, including co-op multiplayer on the same iPad, a split-screen versus mode, new bigger airfields (and a Snow airfield with variable wind direction), and one more interesting little feature: 3D.
Yes, Flight Control HD has an anaglyphic image effect going on with one of the airfields. You'll have to procure your own red/cyan [...]

7) Kindle app for iPad now live
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/kindle-app-for-ipad-now-live/
Filed under: iPadThe Kindle app for iPad has hit the app store. Kindle for iPad is a universal app -- the same app works on the iPhone or iPad. Almost two weeks ago, Amazon first previewed the Kindle iPad app. The app has many of the same visual motifs as the iBooks app that was released yesterday including visual page swipes and book cover navigation view.
A bit of eye candy that's unique to the Kindle app is that the sky behind the figure beneath the tree iconography will change according to what time of day it is.
Note that books bought through the Kindle for iPad app must be read within the app itself and will not be viewable in Apple's iBooks app, nor will they show up in the Books library in iTunes' source list.

8) 1Password for iPad will be free upgrade from iPhone version
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/1password-for-ipad-will-be-free-upgrade-from-iphone-version/
Filed under: iPadAgile Web Solutions, the company behind 1Password, has laid out what I have seen as the most sensible model so far for pricing on iPad apps. They announced on their blog how the new apps will work: They are selling 1Password for iPad for $6.99 and it is aimed at people who do not and will not own the iPhone/iPod touch versions. This version will be all iPad, all the time.
If you have an iPad and an iPhone/iPod touch, you can pick up 1Password Pro right now for $8.99 (it's on sale right now, the price will eventually go up to $14.99) and later on, this version will also include other features that won't make it to the standard version (one in particular they mention is MobileMe syncing).
I'm happy to read anything about iPhone and iPad app development, and I like hearing that someone has given thought to, and made allowances for, both types of iPad users (those who own [...]

9) Apple, Inc. market cap now exceeds Walmart
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/apple-inc-market-cap-now-exceeds-wal-mart/
Filed under: Apple FinancialApple and Walmart have been playing stock market tag over the past few weeks to see which company's market capitalization would be higher. At the time of this writing, Apple's market capitalization of $213.98 billion exceeds Walmart's market cap of $211.14 billion -- a difference of $2.84 billion. Currently, Microsoft and Exxon are the only US companies whose market caps exceed Apple's, with Microsoft at $255.75 billion and Exxon at $319.21 billion.
The overly simplified way of looking at it: Apple as a company is now worth more than Walmart, the world's largest retailer. Granted, market cap is only one way of gauging a company's financial worth, but considering the pile of cash Apple is sitting on right now, it doesn't seem like a huge stretch to say that Apple's economic worth is at least very closely represented by its position in the market cap [...]

11) How iPod docks have reshaped movies
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/02/how-ipod-docks-have-reshaped-movies/
Filed under: Blast From the PastTV shows and movies often reflect the prevailing pop cultural themes of their day and age. One fixture from the eighties and early nineties was the boombox. Like big hair, Members Only jackets, and women wearing shoulder pad-laden tops, boomboxes were seemingly everywhere during that era. You'd be hard pressed not to find a boombox adorned on one's shoulder or booming away on a playground in many urban cities.
Much like how Sony passed the Walkman/Discman torch to the iPod, boomboxes have given way to iPod docks. On this eve launch of the potentially revolutionary iPad, which could displace books and magazines, let's take a stroll through memory lane and look at some flicks that may not be as relevant if made in today's technological age.

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet (I already downloaded the software but haven't received my iPad) but I am so looking forward to using it. HTC manufactures several Google Android handsets, and even though they're not mentioned in the claim specifically, it's understood that Google's phones are the intended target. Both Google and HTC have responded with their intention to fight back, should the case progress.
On Wednesday, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) agreed to review Apple's allegations, and intend to have a resolution within 45 days of the start of investigations.

Here, at TUAW, we are all about the cool, the awesome, and the amazing, as well as the surreal. Accordéon for the iPad, a new App Store application, falls solidly into the latter category. Alex Komarov was kind enough to send over this video, showing the $3.99 app in action, complete with a text-to-speech voice over monkey. As fellow TUAW blogger Steve Sande put it, this video is "a really weird dream that you keep hoping you'll wake up from."
This application offers a virtual accordion playing experience, as its name implies. It has buttons, it has keys, and it leverages multitouch technology so you can press buttons and keys at the same time. No word on how you can "pump" the app, like you would a real accordion though.
