1) iPad app previews aplenty all across the Web

We're seeing tons and tons of news about iPad apps dropping now, and we're still a few days away from launch. In addition to our own coverage, here's a bunch of the other previews we've seen popping up around the community:

This iVerse Comics app looks excellent, and it's one of the first universal binaries we've seen -- one purchase will get you the app on both your iPhone and your iPad. In-app purchase content will cross over as well.
Flickr won't have an official app yet (as far as we know), but Flickr Photos will let you browse through Flickr on the iPad right away.
Sonasaurus Rex is a looping/music app that will be available on day one.
iTap will have a VNC client available for the iPad right away.
Of course, no iPad will be complete with [...]

2) Wolfram Alpha lowers iPhone app price, will give refunds
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/01/wolfram-alpha-lowers-iphone-app-price-back-down-will-give-refun/

Filed under: SoftwareWell here's an interesting twist on the Wolfram Alpha saga -- after initially releasing their "knowledge system" on the iPhone and then pulling it and trying to go premium with a $50 iPhone app, they've now reversed their position once again. The iPhone app will drop back down to $1.99 on Sunday, and there will again be a free mobile site accessible from the iPhone (and presumably the iPad as well). Wolfram Alpha seems to be cognizant of their mistaken decision to try and go premium on the app, and they're even offering refunds for those who purchased the app before this announcement.

It's great that everyone will have access to the app again (and we're sure they'll see a lot more usage as a result), but it does say something about the App Store when an app with as much function as Wolfram Alpha can't find a premium selling point. Hopefully they'll find some other [...]

3) Hulu coming to iPad... sometime, eventually
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/01/hulu-coming-to-ipad-sometime-eventually/

Filed under: iPadNo date, no forecast, but it's a work in progress: in a story about the profit prospects for Hulu, the New York Times mentions that four sources familiar with the site's plans say there is a Hulu app in the works. This was rumored back in February, but the expectation was that the app would launch with the iPad... doesn't look like it will, at this point.

The possibility mentioned is that the app will come along with some sort of subscription plan for television content, which would be both irksome to existing Hulu fans who love the (free) website, and potentially get a scornful eyebrow from the App Store poobahs for stealing fire from the iTunes television show business.

We've been hoping for a Hulu app for the iPhone for a long time, but there's no discussion of that in the current NYT story. Shame, too, as it was supposedly coming "within a few months" just about a [...]

4) Stephen Fry unboxes his iPad

Filed under: iPad
Actor/comedian Stephen Fry has published a brief but oh-so-tantalizing iPad unboxing video. Above you'll see Stephen open the Apple-branded case, the iPad itself (complete with a dramatic and thoroughly warranted wooshing sound), the 10W adapter and keyboard dock.

He also grabbed the non-keyboard dock. Yes, it's brief but it gives us a nice idea of what the packaging is like (the iPad's box is thicker than I imagined) and, frankly, the sheer joy of opening such a snazzy toy.

He's begun playing, too, and is sharing his experience via Twitter. So far, he's called the Gray Wolfram Periodic table "gorgeous" and "alone worth iPad," and posted a screenshot of Scrabble. Thanks for sharing, Stephen, and keep those tweets coming!TUAWStephen Fry unboxes his iPad [...]

5) Andy Ihnatko: iPad is pure innovation, one of best computers ever
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/andy-ihnatko-ipad-is-pure-innovation-one-of-best-computers-e/

Filed under: iPadUncle Walt has weighed in, and most of the other big tech pundits are starting to weigh in on the Apple iPad. The Chicago Sun Times columnist and Mac geek extraordinaire Andy Ihnatko has offered his input, not only in the first of what he says will be many posts about the device, but also in an interview on Leo Laporte's TWiT Live MacBreak Weekly.

tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/andy-ihnatko-ipad-is-pure-innovation-one-of-best-computers-e/'
tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"

The headline says it all -- Ihnatko says that the iPad is one of the best computers ever. He starts his review by saying that the iPad meets or exceeds all of the hype that preceded the release, and then goes on to mention that "it's a computer that many people have wanted for years."

As in Walt Mossberg's review, Andy comments that it can easily last 10 hours on a charge, it can [...]

6) Edward C. Baig: iPad is a winner

Filed under: iPad tweetmeme_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/edward-c-baig-ipad-is-a-winner" tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"
Edward C. Baig at USA Today is among those at top newspapers who posted their first take on the iPad this evening. His verdict? Definitely a winner.

Look out, Nintendo and Sony. Amazon, go cower in the corner with the Kindle. The iPad will be giving all of them a run for their money, Baig says. "At the very least, the iPad will likely drum up mass-market interest in tablet computing in ways that longtime tablet visionary and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates could only dream of," Baig points out. Ouch. Point to Steve Jobs.

Baig's review goes through a rundown of the iPad that we're all familiar with -- both its strong points and its faults. But, he points out the magnificent capabilities -- especially when it comes to things such as e-books as he describes the [...]

7) David Pogue weighs in on iPad, David Pogue weighs in on iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/david-pogue-weighs-in-on-ipad-david-pogue-weighs-in-on-ipad/

Filed under: iPad

If you feel that you're seeing double, and things are repeating on you, don't be alarmed. David Pogue's New York Times review of the iPad takes on the challenge of dual perceptions of the device -- savvy geeks who poo-poo it as "just a big iPod touch, and more expensive than a netbook" vs. everyone else who swoons "It's a big iPod touch! Awesome!" -- by delivering two separate reviews.

tweetmeme_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/david-pogue-weighs-in-on-ipad-david-pogue-weighs-in-on-ipad/" tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"
Pogue's tech-centric review (appropriate for those, he says, who meet the following standards: "Do you use BitTorrent? Do you run Linux? Do you have more e-mail addresses than pants?") reiterates the standard complaints -- no Flash, not enough storage, no ports, too pricey. Then the 'for the rest of us' review proceeds to dismiss those [...]

8) iPad the star of Modern Family
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/ipad-the-star-of-modern-family/

Filed under: iPad

Warning: This post contains spoilers about the latest episode of Modern Family. You have been warned.

One of my favorite TV shows, Modern Family, was all about the iPad tonight, just days before the big release. The main character, Phil Dunphy, is thrilled at the prospect of receiving an iPad for his birthday, which coincides with the device's release. Of course, the show is a sitcom -- so it doesn't go as smoothly as he hoped.

tweetmeme_url = "http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/ipad-the-star-of-modern-family/" tweetmeme_source = "tuaw"
Throughout the episode, Phil's wife waits in line at an Apple Store while she has her kids asking everyone they know if they can get their hands one on via Twitter, Facebook and text. It all works out in the end when Phil's youngest son pulls an iPad out of a paper bag for his dad.

It certainly was real and not a prop. After singing [...]

9) Uncle Walt delivers his verdict on iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/uncle-walt-delivers-his-verdict-on-ipad/

Filed under: iPadHere we go, cats and kiddies. Walt Mossberg's had his iPad for a week now, and he's got to tell us all about it. Quotes below are transcribed from his video review.

"The question in my mind is just how important will this be... On one level I think this has the potential to challenge the laptop, it has the potential to, I think, even challenge the whole user interface we've had on computers and sort of set up a slow evolution towards multitouch and gesture and away from the mouse-driven interface.... That's it's potential. But it depends on whether -- not everyone, but enough people decide that they can carry this instead of a laptop or a netbook. That is, that it can do much of what they want to do on their netbook or a laptop most of the time... so that they can just pick this up and take it with them, or use it around the house, and not crack open that bulkier, [...]

With just a few days to go before we can actually get our hands on an iPad, Newer Technology Inc., better known to us as NewerTech, has introduced quite a fancy custom handcrafted Brazilian leather protective carrying case for the iPad. It's made in the US and comes in either black or red at an introductory price of US $99.99 (down from the MSRP of $129.99), for shipment on April 5th.

It seems to be built like a battleship and is backed with a lifetime warranty. It comes with a double stitched leather handle and a shoulder strap that extends from 24" to 48". The left side, sports a 7" X 10" hard backed document sleeve and two taffeta lined pockets so you won't mar whatever you decide to put in them.

The right side features 4 elastic, [...]

11) Apple updates MobileMe Gallery app
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/apple-updates-mobileme-gallery-app/

Filed under: MobileMeMobileMe has some great features, but Apple needs to stay on top of it to keep it competitive with other services. It's a bit pricey and hasn't changed all that much over the last couple of years, so new features are always worthy of notice.

Fortunately, Apple made one small step for mankind by releasing an update to the MobileMe Gallery app for the iPhone and iPod touch today.

Now it is easy to add your friends' MobileMe Galleries with just a couple of clicks on your touch screen. When you select "Add a Friend," the app will search your contact list and indicate which of your friends have MobileMe Galleries. Click on add from there, and it's done. Slick.

It's not a big deal, but it's a nice touch, especially for a service on which updates are sparse. The update takes the app to version 1.1 and is as close as a tap on your iPhone's App Store icon, or you can [...]

12) Apple tweaking iPhone to work better on AT&T's network
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/apple-tweaking-iphone-to-work-better-on-atandts-network/

Filed under: iPhonePowerpage.org cites a Wall Street Journal article reporting that Apple has worked with AT&T to "rejigger" how the iPhone works with AT&T's towers, resulting in a reduced load for some tasks. It was not clear what changes were made, but apparently a "crash course in wireless technology" allowed them to figure out how the iPhone can get along better with AT&T.

Such news indicates the lengths that Apple is willing to go to in order to be a good partner with AT&T. While few people are singing AT&T's praises, apparently there is an effort within the company to improve the network in large cities to reduce the number of dropped calls. According to Powerpage, "A random performance test released in February found that AT&T's 3G network speeds had improved by 84%."

The problem is that AT&T's 3G speed has never been the main issue. AT&T is, and has been, very happy to compare [...]

13) First Look: CourseNotes for iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/first-look-coursenotes-for-ipad/

Filed under: iPad
CourseNotesApp developer Jon Klein was kind enough to send over this video of his upcoming iPad app. Aimed at students, this app not only simplifies iPad note taking, but helps keep those notes organized by time and subject. I showed this video around to a student-heavy group and the video received an overwhelming thumbs up.

"I think the most exciting thing about the iPad is that it's like the iPhone but it's bring it into new areas, where the iPhone wasn't practical," Klein told me over the phone. "Education is a perfect example of that. The iPhone OS will be a great platform for taking notes but the iPhone form wasn't there." With the iPad-based CourseNotesApp, now it can be.TUAWFirst Look: CourseNotes for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 19:00:00 EST. 14) SecondBar puts your menu bar on a second monitor
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/31/secondbar-puts-your-menu-bar-on-a-second-monitor/

Filed under: SoftwareThe menu bar is a quintessential piece of the Mac "experience." On the left, it shows all of the menu items for the currently active application; on the right, it shows icons from various menu bar application programs: the date/time, WiFi status, MobileMe sync status, and many, many more.

The whole idea is to make the menu items easy to find and easy to "hit" with a mouse, by being connected to the top of the screen (Fitts's law and all that). But what if you have two monitors? Suddenly the menu bar might be all the way over on the other side. Yes, I realize that complaining about using a Mac with two monitors might be the quintessential "first-world problem," but the more minor irritants you can remove from life, the better.

SecondBar is an app which will extend your menu bar to a second monitor. I've been using it for a while and it works pretty well for what [...]
