1) Inventory screenshot from Microcenter shows imminent MacBook Pro updates

We've received an anonymous tip from a Microcenter employee in the form of a screenshot of Microcenter's inventory system. The screenshot appears to show that a MacBook Pro update is imminent. Microcenter's inventory system shows four different SKUs for upcoming Macs, as outlined below:

Apple System Good-USA MC371LL/A $1799.99

Mac system #1 Best-USA MC373LL/A $2199.99

Mac system #2 Best-USA MC024LL/A $2299.99

Mac system Better- USA MC372LL/A $1999.99

These prices seem to indicate updated 15" and 17" MacBook Pros, presumably updated with the latest i5 and i7 Intel processors. MacRumors says they have received independent confirmation of this info from Microcenter. This latest indication of a MacBook Pro update comes less than a week after an earlier leak from a Taiwanese newspaper which claimed MacBook Pro updates are coming later this month. There doesn't [...]

2) Adobe admits Apple's no-Flash policy could hurt business
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/adobe-admits-apples-no-flash-policy-could-hurt-business/

Filed under: Apple CorporateAdobe has filed its latest quarterly Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) report, just one day after Apple previewed iPhone OS 4.0. In the document, Adobe outlines the risk that Apple's prohibition on Flash brings to the company. In the "Risk Factors" section of the filing, Adobe stated that exclusion of Flash on devices "such as the Apple iPhone or iPad, make it more difficult for our products to perform, and [if] our customers are persuaded to use alternative technologies, our business could be harmed."

Apple does not compete with Adobe over technologies like Flash. Apple's decision to leave Flash off its multi-touch devices is based on (according to Apple) the instability of Flash and the power drain Flash causes on portable devices.

The lack of Flash on the iPhone has been a realm of contention between Adobe and Apple since the iPhone launched in [...]

3) From iPhone to iPad: Revisiting Super Monkey Ball 2
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/from-iphone-to-ipad-revisiting-super-monkey-ball-2/

There are a lot of great new apps for the iPad, and there are some terrific old ones that have made the move as well. In "From iPhone to iPad," TUAW will revisit some of our favorite games and utilities that originated on the iPhone, and see how they've transitioned to the larger device. Have they made the most out of the new hardware? Is the application worth a separate re-purchase? After all, you can keep running nearly all of your old software in pixel doubling mode.

First up? Super Monkey Ball 2. We first looked at Super Monkey Ball a couple of years ago. My kids and I found the game hard to play, although I did appreciate the graphics. I wasn't alone in my negative SMB assessment. Its sequel, Monkey Ball 2, debuted late last year. It was a worthy follow-on that greatly improved on the original's playability, and generally garnered good reviews. The iPhone [...]

4) Should the ESRB be on the App Store?
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/should-the-esrb-be-on-the-app-store/

Here's an interesting topic of discussion from Slide to Play: Now that Apple seems to be going all-in on gaming with its Game Center app, should the Entertainment Software Ratings Board start looking at App Store games?

The ESRB is the self-regulatory industry group that's responsible for passing out game ratings to game developers, and marking whether games are appropriate or inappropriate for younger gamers. So far, they've been pretty hands off on the App Store, relying instead on iTunes' Application Ratings to let consumers determine what's right for them. However, gaming on the App Store is getting bigger, and the ESRB has already shown interest in looking at App Store apps.

Personally, I don't think this is needed; the App Store environment is already held down with an iron grip by Apple's editors, and if anything, it's probably too sensitive. Besides, as a [...]

5) DIY coolness: a duct tape iPad sleeve and two clever docks

Frank Hsueh might have been out of quid after buying his iPad, or he perhaps he just likes the texture of duct tape. As Frank noted in an email to TUAW this morning, he made an iPad sleeve out of nothing but a bubble envelope, duct tape, double-sided tape, and an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle.

Frank used up his roll of double-sided tape securing the inner bubble padding, so he used the tape core to make an iPad stand. As Frank said, it's "perfect for movie watching or notes typing (with wireless keyboard) in landscape mode."

Another TUAW reader, Wilson Lam, had an even more green solution for an iPad stand -- while he's waiting for a stand from Quirky, Wilson found that a cardboard cup [...]

Filed under: TUAW Business We've had a few inquiries on our tip line and feedback form in the past few days about managing your TUAW commenter profile. Whenever you leave a comment on a TUAW post, an account is created for you using the name and email address that you use in the "New Readers" tab in the comment field.
You wil receive an email with a subject line that reads: "The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Please confirm your comment." The body of the email will ask you to "Please activate your comments by clicking the following URL." That request is followed by a fairly random looking URL such as "http://www.tuaw.com/confirm/ d3c2c40709244bdab990689e484f419c/".
Once you do that, you will receive another email with a subject line that says "Thanks for confirming your account on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)." Save that email message! It will contain your email address and a [...]

7) iPhone OS 4.0: Multitasking support hidden away for pre-3GS devices
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/iphone-os-40-multitasking-support-hidden/

After Thursday's iPhone OS 4.0 event, when asked why multitasking was being excluded on devices older than the iPhone 3GS, Apple said that the older devices just couldn't do it. However, that wasn't quite true. A developer, who's been messing around with the iPhone OS 4.0 preview, has found that by simply switching just one variable in preferences, multitasking can indeed be enabled on the iPhone 3G.

As far as we know, there won't be a flag in the final release version of the OS, but it looks like you can switch it on by tweaking one file on your own phone (which will require jailbreak). Of course, jailbreakers already have access to multitasking, and they'll be able to use Apple's official method as well, it seems.

Steve and Scott Forstall have a little explaining to do -- why were we told yesterday that all of the devices before the 3GS couldn't multitask? It's [...]

8) iPhone OS 4: Google branding removed in Safari search
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/iphone-os-4-google-branding-removed-in-safari-search/

iLounge has pointed out that the "Google" branded search button in mobile Safari has been renamed "Search" in iPhone OS 4. Is this a sign that Apple is about to dump Google from mobile search? Despite their increasing competition, it's highly unlikely that Apple will entirely eliminate Google from mobile Safari search. Google is still the world's number one search engine by a wide margin; eliminating it from Safari's search function would alienate a lot of users.

So what could the "Google"/"Search" switch mean? Most likely it's that iPhone OS 4 will have search engine options in addition to Google and Yahoo! (like Bing), and Apple wants to have a universal button that reads "search" no matter what engine the user chooses to use. Other possibilities could be that Apple and Google have not agreed on a financial arrangements for Google to be the default search in OS 4 [...]

9) Dear Apple, you're half-way there
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/10/dear-apple-youre-half-way-there/

In January you told Apple what you wanted in iPhone OS 4.0. Did the development team heed your advice? Well, even though iPhone OS 4 is only in its first beta release, Apple has already added 50% of the major features you wanted.

What was delivered?

Vertical swiping, app switching, background VoIP/audio playback and enhanced abilities for apps to save state and return you to the point where you left off are available in iPhone OS 4 through the new multitasking features. App organization and overall device app capacity has been improved with the introduction of Folders. A new home screen has been implemented with background wallpapers and a new dock.

What got left out?

Flash (and it's never going to happen, so just forget about it), a new lock screen, support for more codecs, and disk mode are the obvious ones that didn't make the list. However, some of the [...]
